What an amazing race for the overall team championship. Only a few hundred points separate 1st from 3rd. Scoring includes Juniors x.2 and Seniors. X.8 including 6 Hour Team Relays.

These are the Michigan Cup Individual Results to date. Note, I scored the Juniors in both the 6K Vasa and Grand Traverse even though the brochure says it should be the longer races.

As winter snows cover the rolling hills of Northern Michigan’s wine country, several wineries on the scenic Leelanau Peninsula near Traverse City have responded with a new approach to touring and tasting: a vineyard-to-vineyard ski and snowshoe trail.

LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

THU, JAN 18

Black Mountain: Three to four inches of new snow earlier in the week has made for good skiing out at Black Mountain. Parts of the system have been rolled - not enough snow to lay track, but there are a few inches that most classic skiers have laid a good base of track down with. Temperatures are predicted to reach above freezing this weekend, so watch the weather and the best skiing may be in the morning, late afternoon or evening. The temperatures are expected to decline next week, so trails should remain in present condition. Leaf litter is on the decline, most parts of the system have little leaf litter currently. The ski season continues out at Black Mountain!

Independance Oaks: Good packed conditions with reasonable coverage. Use your A skis with caution.

Valley Spur: Great conditions with fresh snow and grooming every day this past week. All the grooming has firmed up the skate deck and classic tracks are in Excellent shape. Skiing will be very good through the weekend.

Kensington Metropark: Golf course was groomed yesterday or early today. Wind blown in spots, but pretty skiable. Several areas with gravel, one place could not be gone around. For some reason, my skis were really slow along the freeway, otherwise not bad. I used my rock skis. Later I tried the religious area, I double poled mostly, towards the Goose Sect, and then to other sects. No grooming there, pretty skied in, with the occasional horse and walkers.
A bit confusing, the parking lot is closed and says it is closed until spring. Had to find another way to the trail.

Crystal Mountain: I groomed everything today. Track set is still shallow but skiable. We won't be grooming tomorrow. Get out and ski before the warm-up.

Huron Meadows Metropark: They added snow and groomed buck's run today. Trail is in great shape for classic and skate right today.

Vasa Trail: Very grateful for the TART groomers, our wonder-ful Vasa trail, and my long-time ski buddy, Kathy Cook-Dowd, who waited for me as we skied the 27k loop counterclockwise today. Not that much snow in the woods, but deep tracks on the 25k loop, shallow on the 10k, as usual. The trail is in great condition, as we head into a warm-up & possible rain, ugh! It was above freezing when we finished, but not too sunny, which was perfect for Kathy's kick wax & my Twin Skins. I always enjoy skiing in reverse since lots of fun downhills, including The Wall, yee-haw! Note: There were lots of leaves and little twigs in the tracks, so had to take care on the downhills.

Vasa Trail: Groomers combed the skate lane this morning but left yesterday's classic tracks as they were -- solid and fast. Yesterday's high winds scattered a lot of oak leaves on the trail, many of which nestled in the classic tracks. So classic was tough going along many stretches. Temps were above freezing by midday as the weekend thaw sneaks into town.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Started at 7:45am today and no grooming had been done. Bucks Run was skiable, but there were a lot of oak leaves to skate around. Took a detour and skated the woodsy part of the north golf course. That was much better although there were some areas where the dirt is starting to show. It appeared the crew was adding snow to Buck Run, so perhaps they will groom later today.

Hanson Hills: Cote Dame Tentative Race Schedule: **EVENT HELD AT FORBUSH CORNER
8-9:30am Registration
9:30am Junior Boy's Start (6.5.KM)
9:33am Junior Girl's Start (6.5KM)
10:00am MI-Cup Men Start (19.5KM)
10:03am MI-Cup Women Start (13KM)

Hanson Hills: No new snow to report. The snow we received Monday, has packed to the trail system nicely. Trails are skiable, however we feel the hills are still really icy and dangerous to withstand skier traffic. We will continue to keep trails closed through the weekend. Temperatures will climb back into the 40's Friday and Saturday, with possible rain on Sunday.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: It was another great day of skiing on the John Deere loop, as well as the Rolling Hills trail! Groomer Mike snow combed yesterday afternoon, so conditions on those trails will be great again today. Trail Doctor Bob will finish extending the John Deere loop with the snow spreader today. The John Deere loop is great for A skis, the Rolling Hills is good for A skis if you’re careful, and the Manitou, Wild Turkey, Mackinaw Cut, Trapper’s Cabin, and Adventure are open for rock skiing today. The practice area still has plenty of coverage for ski demos and lessons. Snowshoeing is welcome on all the trails as well.

Stop by and demo some skis! Free equipment demos are available all day, every day. Our sale on XC ski packages and cross country ski clothing continues on great deals from Fischer, Salomon, Smartwool, and more. Today’s Stone Turtle Cafe lunch special is Chili and 2 Bosco Sticks for just $5! Enjoy these cheese filled breadsticks dipped in your choice of housemade Classic or Veggie Chili.

See you at HQ!

Stokely Creek: Stokely's trails and grooming conditions have been great all week. Alex who has groomed at Stokely for over 30 years said the ski Mountain trail to the King Mt hut and the King Mountain run is in as good a shape as it has ever been. Right now skiing on the lakes is a skiers delight. You should put March 3rd on your calendars and join us for our big new event called Tour De` Huts. Look up the details on our web-site stokelycreek/events. It will be a winter celebration that will last all day.
