No surprise here: You get the members of the team out to race, you have some good results, and you win the overall Michigan Cup...again! Congratulations to the Cross Country Ski Headquarters!
The idea of using ice rink shavings originated a few years back at the University of Utah. Here in Traverse City, we have a skating rink with a very willing set of Zamboni drivers who were more than willing to help create snow for us..
With the temperature well below freezing in West Yellowstone last night and five inches of snow above 8,000 feet, planning for the 2011 Yellowstone Ski Festival is in full swing.
For many, the Back Forty was our favorite trail. Long and cruisey on the hills with a couple of challenging ones and then there is the perfect training hill, Interval Hill. Well, after many years of absence, the Back Forty is back!
I enjoyed that Alternative Waxing article, and I have my own story to tell...
We have purchased the business from Dick Fultz and look forward to carrying on his 34-year presence in the Grayling community. It will be our goal to continue the customer service the Nordic skiing community has come to expect from Dick and his staff.
Glenn Goodman and Robin Luce experimented with non-traditional "waxes" in the days leading up to the Nordic Fest Season Opener Race and made some interesting discoveries...
Over 900 cross-country skiers from around the U.S. and Canada competed last winter at Traverse City’s North American Vasa Festival of Races. And organizers expect hundreds more to attend the 2012 festival.
Fischer Skis announced an increase of more than 20% in pre-season sales of Nordic ski products as cross country skiing experiences a surge in popularity across the nation. There are now more than 4.5 million cross country skiers in the U.S.
Decorated Olympic and World Championship medalists Billy Demong, Johnny Spillane and Todd Lodwick highlight a roster of some of the world's top athletes for the just-named 2012 U.S. Nordic Combined Ski Team.
If you raced in the Nordic Fest Season Opener and are a member of a Michigan Cup team, you are now in first place in the individual standings. The VASA Ski Club leads the team standings.
The narrow 100 meter course was tricky. There were tight fast corners, undulations, and, if you weren't centered in the lane, grass just off the edge ready to catch a ski tip. But it was snow, in October!
Our first wax recommendation of the new racing season!

Dunes Golf Club: Snow conditions repaired the natural way.
7" plus on the ground with more on the way Sunday and Monday.
A classic skiers dream.
Natural conditions exist with moist heavy snow.
Plowed parking at entrance.
All this on Friday the 13th
Reindeer Run Nordic Center: Ungroomed conditions exist.
Reindeer Run Nordic Center: Empire airport snowmobile trailhead
7+ and counting, hard pack base, local st riders have been using the county line (oviat rd) to get access to snowmobile trail and backcountry areas, this is a county plowed parking area. A popular parking area and usually used daily by skiers. The Osborn rd parking lot may not be plowed but parking on road shoulder is okay.
More snow expected Sunday and Monday.
Heavy moist snow on in groomed conditions exist.
Main snowmobile trail I would expect some moderate snow machine activity.
Sort of the endless winter syndrome...
Hiawatha Highlands: Good Morning Everyone!! It's not as cool as yesterday morning, and it has started to snow.....temp -6 C.
There was no grooming overnight -- we actually had no snowfall overnight, until just recently. It is quite windy out, so the open areas could have windswept snow over the trails.
The Mabel Lake Trail was groomed yesterday as of 11:30 a.m.
We hope everybody has a fantastic day!!
Cross Country Ski Headquarters: We gotten about 5" of fresh snow this morning, with no sign of it stopping! Trails are open today and all skiable, but not groomed yet. We plan to have the trails groomed by tomorrow morning, with some pretty darn good 'spring skiing' available. This weekend could be a truly amazing 'last hurrah"!
Nubs Nob: No bare spots anywhere- skied the red loop - a hard pack very well groomed base with an inch of fresh on top. . Snow was granular , high moisture and a bit sticky for my wax , HF7 : but I bet others got it right . Bluebird day on a great trail !
Forbush Corner: The predicted heavy snow is falling, forecast is 6 to 8 inches in the next 24 hours. We expect to groom, but expect soft conditions and new snow accumulating. This is great news for tomorrow. We will be able to open up the whole trail system with great conditions. The forecast for Sunday and Monday is for a major winter storm. We may have to close and wait this storm out. Stay tuned. We will see how it goes. The forecast keeps changing!
Boyne Mountain: The big thaw left our trails in very marginal condition. We will be closed Friday, the 13th, and reopening on Saturday, the 14th, trusting that Mother Nature is about to replenish our snow. We hope to be open through Sunday the 22nd, but will update as conditions dictate.

Dunes Golf Club: Looks like Dawson tracks all over the place...
As always best snow with a base is all the way in the back (south) on the east west fairway which is last to go in the spring. Some actually will walk for their last runs. See what we get in the next snow event.
"It's the hard core skiers who last out the season."
Ernie Brumbaugh
Stokely Creek: Full trail system groom with snow and perfect temps in the forecast. Peak ski season continues just quick border crossing away. One plus side to USA being rogue is no wait at customs!
Hiawatha Highlands: We are so excited!!! It's a beautiful sunny morning up here, we got some more snow overnight and the temps cooled down....currently at -9 C.
The groomer was out this morning -- all systems were groomed with the Piston Bully for both classic and skate.
It's a perfect day to grab your gear and head on up for a ski.....the trails are dialed in and looking splendid!
Forbush Corner: Opening back up today now that cooler temperatures have returned. Icing has also returned. Fresh groom on the man-made snow loops only. Snow is in the forecast, so we should be able to get some additional trails open over the weekend. Open 9 to 5. Spring trail fee $10.
Stokely Creek: Surprisingly skiable despite no groom today. There's a half inch of slow snow in the tracks, so if you stayed in the tracks it was fine. Out of the track was a rutted frozen slush ridge clustermunch. Stay in the track.
Base is THICK so this weekend coming up looks like excellent skiing!
