LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

TUE, DEC 10

Hartwick Pines: Classic skied 12k loop. 2 inches of fluffy new snow over old groomed track. Very good skiing,, especially now that the tracks are skiing groomed.

Vasa Trail: I waited until TART emailed their VASA Grooming Report at 11:21AM, then headed out to Timber Ridge. I had less than 2" fresh snow on top of yesterday's frozen rain base at home, but 3-4" there, so decided to use my skin skis on the freshly rolled trails. Since I wasn't certain if the hills would be icy, I skied the Special K to the 10k split, then clockwise on the 25k loop to the Wall Bypass, Rock & through Jack Pine, which is more uphill than downhill. The coverage on the 10K & Wall Bypass was limited, so a little dirty, whereas the 25k was really good. There were a few semi-exposed roots still & some leaves, but smoother, except for Jack Pine, which is bumpy due to the steepness of the 3 hills. The Vasa base has not been deep enough yet to set classic tracks, but passed 5 friends near the powerline, Ginny, Mike G, Ed A, Gary O & Dennis M, who were skiing classic, so enjoyed tracks from there back to TR, yee-haw! From the 10k split to this group, there were no other skiers, so skied virgin snow.

Vasa Trail: Conditions on the Vasa were surprisingly good after the groomers rolled the new snow onto the existing 1" frozen base. As Groomer Glen reported today's fresh snow averaged about 1.5" close to the TH. It was about double that amount farther out on the 10K at the Special K Junction, and reported to be even more out on the 25K course.

I can only report on skating the 10K course but most of the old oak leaves are now buried and today's fall-down wasn't too bad, so the leaves are now just an easily avoided minor annoyance and not a potential hazard as previously. In fact from the 4K trail split to the 7K post you'll hardly see a leaf and the groomed base has a nice soft and silky feel due to plenty of new snow, would be a great spot to do reps. Still a few thin spots and roots showing in other areas, so be alert.

Lakes of the North: From Glenn Goodman today................ The race course is probably in the best condition it has ever been in. Good skis can be used. See you on Sat. am. Race starts at 11:00. Free to all juniors.

Dunes Golf Club: Nice 1-2 New on frozen firm base forecast for 4-5 more with low teens for the high weds. Powder day warning!

Kevinski slowski

Vasa Trail: It is 22 degrees here at the trail head and about 1.5? of fresh snow covering about an 1? of base which survived the rain and warmth. Reports called in suggest up to 3-4? of fresh snow further out on the trail.

James and John started out at 10:30 am and are planning to roll the 5k,10k, 25k. They will be out on the trail until mid afternoon.

Wolverine: All Wolverine trails were piston bully groomed and track set this morning. Trails are setting up nicely.

Chassell Classic Trail: Groomed and tracks set Tuesday morning. Conditions are excellent. A winter wonderland.

Nubs Nob: All trails packed today and conditions are good for early season. There is not enough snow to set a track or machine groom yet.

Noquemanon Trail-Forestville: Forestville: Andy took the Bombi out this morning to groom and track set all trails inside the 17k mark. Trails may be a little soft early this morning until the snow sets up.

Saux Head: All trails were groomed and track set Sunday. The trail is in very good skiing condition.

Big Bay Pathway: After a strong volunteer showing this weekend, we have the Big Bay Pathway near ready for setting classic tracks. We have completed brushing from the storms on Hidden Grin Loop, and with fresh snow, will be in good shape. Tracks will be set as soon as this next snow event is over.

Fit Strip: Fit Strip was roll packed yesterday so skate skiers should have fair to good skiing today. Classic tracks will be set as soon as snow depths in the City permit.

Michigan Tech Trails: With the bountiful snow we received yesterday and more on the way the trail are looking excellent! Upper trails have been groomed and tracked this morning but are still relatively soft. Competition and Lower trails are going to be flat-groomed today and then competition trails will be tracked tomorrow. With the thin spots that were appearing before this last snow fall on the Lower trails a decision will be made tomorrow morning on whether the trails will be re-tracked or remain flat-groomed for the time being (dependent on base depth). Tolkien trails have been flat-groomed as of last night and are just about ready for tracks. With more snow coming today, tracks will likely be set tonight or tomorrow morning.

Maasto Hiihto Trail: Today all trails were rolled and tracked. Tracks are getting covered quick by snow and wind. Very soft conditions.

Hickory Hills: I skied Hickory Meadows and it was pretty good. The new snow on top of a nice crust underneath made for good conditions. Skating was better than classic but skin skis would have worked. All the trails were ski-able and I did not hit any dirt or rocks. The hill at the trail-head going counter-clock-wise is very thin so be careful to navigate that hill. Once on top the upper meadows is great. No problem with any of downhills, everything is very controllable. Rolling the course would make it even better so I will check with coach K. I am on deck to groom Hickory tomorrow.

Hickory Hills: We have received 3 inches of fluff, with more falling as I type. Tommy G. is out assessing the base from yesterdays rain. We are hopeful to pack in this new snow and get a couple of inner trails skiable. I will update later this morning.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: While the weather has turned back to cold and snowy - we received just shy of an inch of snow last night - the trails will be closed again today to let the moisture from yesterday fully freeze. Luckily, there is more snow in the forecast for today, and if we get enough we will attempt to groom tomorrow. We will commence snow-making tonight as well.
