What an amazing race for the overall team championship. Only a few hundred points separate 1st from 3rd. Scoring includes Juniors x.2 and Seniors. X.8 including 6 Hour Team Relays.

These are the Michigan Cup Individual Results to date. Note, I scored the Juniors in both the 6K Vasa and Grand Traverse even though the brochure says it should be the longer races.

As winter snows cover the rolling hills of Northern Michigan’s wine country, several wineries on the scenic Leelanau Peninsula near Traverse City have responded with a new approach to touring and tasting: a vineyard-to-vineyard ski and snowshoe trail.

LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

SAT, FEB 23

Black Mountain: Black Mountain continues to have excellent groomed trails with a deep snow base, for both classic and skate skiing, throughout the system. A few inches of new snow has fallen on the groomed trails, but skiers have smoothed the trail system. There have been many skiers taking advantage of the moderating temperatures with highs in the high twenties to low thirties. Keep an eye on the weather, as a predicted storm will clip the area on Saturday night through Sunday that may impact the conditions. The groomed system should hold up well through the storm, barring a lot of snow falling. Predictions are some snow, some rain, which Black Mountain can easily handle.

Next week the temperatures are predicted to be lower, so skiing should be in good shape throughout the coming week.

Forbush Corner: Trails are all groomed and in great shape. The pines loop is skiing better than ever. Temps below freezing until after 12p, and little chance of rain before 4 according to NOAA (one service predicts 7p or later for sprinkles). So, if skiing is something that makes you smile, today is the day. Sales continue - with 30% off attire; and 20% off skis and equipment.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: After beautiful sunny skies and great skiing yesterday, the trails remain in very good to great shape. Groomer Mike snow combed the skating lanes on Trapper's Cabin, Mackinaw Cut, Wild Turkey, Manitou, and Rolling Hills last night, and reset some tracks where needed. The conditions will be fantastic this morning and in the early afternoon, as the wet weather isn't supposed to hit us until 3pm or so. Snow is in the forecast for tomorrow, and temps cool down again tomorrow night, so we are confident that our strong base will hold up well during the little warm spell tonight.

Today’s Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe Lunch Special is Jambalaya! Cajun seasoned sausage, shrimp and chicken with rice, bell peppers and tomatoes, stewed together for a true New Orleans style treat. A perfect lunch after a morning on the trails, or after a free demo of closeout race equipment!

JOIN US FOR THE JUNIOR MUFFIN RACE, SUNDAY, FEB 24TH! Races and age divisions for Junior Muffins: 13 (or younger) to 19, and Mini Muffins: 10 to 12, 7 to 9, and 6 and under. Race start for Junior Muffins is at 10:30am. See you there - costumes encouraged!

FRI, FEB 22

Muncie Lakes Pathway: Wonderfully groomed course, 25 degrees in am moving to 32 by noon. A few oak leaves on track so used no-wax skis. Nice downhills. Hopefully the weekend won’t cause too much havoc.

Big M: February 22, 2019 Friday, All trails except Oh Me ll were groomed today.
Let 's hope it holds with the messy storm system predicted later on Saturday and Sunday.
Dave B, our groomer, can be reached at 231 848-7047.
NOTE: please do not park in front of the gate. Also, if you hike or snowshoe the trails, please stay to the side and off the ski tracks.

Forbush Corner: Magnificent classic tracks set today on the Pines loop. Best ever. We are blessed.

Hickory Hills: First time skiing at Hickory Meadows. What a delight. I did not expect such great grooming.
Deep set tracks--sometimes two sets side by side, wide skate lane, and excellent conditions. Fun place to ski and with Hickory Hills right next door, there is something for everyone.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Trails groomed again today. New track set. Great conditions for both classic and skate on bucks run.

Conditions should be great for Mike Muha island crust skiing in morning.

Boyne Mountain: Trails are in great shape. Although the air is warm, the snow is still firm. Snow is moderate speed.

The sun is shining, so hope you get to enjoy it before the weather changes on Sunday!

Vasa Trail: Today is the day folks - if you can get out, by all means do it.

Classic tracks are in great shape. Skate lane is fast and firm. No soft spots on the uphills.

Shanty Creek - Schuss Mtn: It is a beautiful bluebird day on the SCR Nordic trails. Snow conditions are perfect for a fast glide around Pine Cone and Poet’s Loop, or challenge yourself and skate up Mountain Creek. Brad the Groomer Groomer groomed all trails this morning, and several skiers have reported fast, hard, classic-perfect tracks.

Crystal Mountain: Come out, come out where ever you are. I groomed everything yesterday and Greg touched things up today. I went out and skied the hills first thing this morning and it was so good I wanted to call in sick but couldn't because as I said Greg (my boss) was out grooming and saw me skiing so I couldn't get away with it. Any way conditions couldn't be better. The way things have been this winter with the roller coaster weather you need to ski while you can. There are some leaves down but there will be a lot more on Sunday with the 50mph winds they are calling for. So today's the day. If you can't get here-go somewhere and ski.

Hickory Hills: If you have read my trail reports about Hickory Hills in the past you know how much I rave about this world cup course. It is important if you go there that we show our support and appreciation by purchasing a trail pass or better yet a yearly membership. This is not a free venue, the community needs our support. There is no signage indicating a trail pass is required so you need to make sure you go to the club house or even knock on the trailer door. One day last week I couldn't even find someone to pay. If you do go there, write a trail report, we need more comments other than myself. Hickory management is still sorting things out but I am convinced this is going to draw national attention some day.

Forbush Corner: Amazing conditions for skate and classic skiing today. All east and west trails are groomed and firm; and today Larry is grooming the Hartwick Pines Loop (Roberts, Townline, and the top of the Weary Legs Loop). Not to mention 30% off all apparel; and 20% off skis and equipment. We also have a handful of demos (skate 2.0 - amazing) for skiers to try.

Hanson Hills: Trails do not get any better than what we have had the past week! Ton's of snow, perfect skate lanes and deep set tracks!

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: The ski conditions are very good to excellent on all trails. Groomer Butch reset tracks yesterday with great results, despite a few remaining oak leaves. Groomer Mike will snow comb the skating lanes this morning. Snow depth in the woods is 24 to 27 inches, and packed on the trail about 13 to 15 inches. Despite some wet weather in the forecast, the skiing will be very good Saturday morning until early afternoon, so plan on taking advantage of the great conditions while we have them!

Join us for the Junior Muffin Race this Sunday, Feb 24th!

The longest standing Junior race in Michigan, the Muffin Race celebrates the fun of youth skiing with a Junior Girls & Boys Team Sprint Relay race. Inspired by the Gold Medal victory by Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall in the 2018 Olympics, this freestyle relay race will feature two skiers per relay team. Each skier will ski a total of 3 laps around a 1km course, handing off to their teammate between each lap, totaling 6 laps per team. Registration begins at 9:30am on Sunday, and we will shoot for a 10:30am start. This is a Michigan Cup Junior Race. Medals will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in the girls division, boys division, and coed division, and awards will also be given for best costumes! Registration s $10. The Mini Muffin races (for ages 6 to 12) will take place immediately after, and there is no registration fee for the Minis. See you there, rain or shine!!!
