LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

SUN, JAN 21

Stokely Creek: It was well below freezing this morning so our groomers went out. They said the trails were still in good shape and will continue to be today. We have a snowstorm forecast for Monday afternoon. Fresh snow is always great.

Did you know, if you are a competitive person, that Stokely has a challenge for you. We have 6 huts on our trails system. About 15 of our guests over the last three years have met the Stokely challenge and skied to all 6 huts in one day. Depending on your route the distance is about 40 km. We have a great one of a kind t-shirt for any guest that beats the challenge.

Boyne Mountain: No grooming today due to warm weather and diminishing base. We haven't had any reports of thin spots in the woods, but open areas could develop some thin spots as the day becomes warmer. Vistas still has a couple of thin and bare spots. Deer Run remains closed, and while Runway has recovered a bit with the colder temperatures overnight there are still some rutted areas from the truck that drove on it the other night. Skiing Runway is not recommended. Conditions overall remain fair, with the best skiing probably coming in the late morning and early afternoon.

Forbush Corner: Temps below freezing overnight.  The base has stayed mainly intact over the weekend.  The plan is to re-groom Rollercoaster and the Green Trail this morning.  All the other trails are still skiable with just a few minor bare spots.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: The John Deere Loop, which is composed of part of the Rolling Hills and Adventure trails, is still in very good shape with the mass of manmade snow we spread out along it this past week. We were able to set deep tracks, which are holding up quite well. Groomer Mike will snow comb the skating lanes this morning. Overall it is in very good condition for classic and skate skiing. Rolling Hills is also in good enough condition for rock skis. The Manitou, Wild Turkey, Mackinaw Cut, Trapper’s Cabin, and Adventure are best for snowshoes today. The practice area still has plenty of coverage for ski demos and lessons!

Stop by and demo some skin skis! Free equipment demos are available all day, every day. The synthetic mohair bases on our skin skis get tremendous grip in these warmer temps! Our sale on XC ski packages and cross country ski clothing continues!

Today’s Stone Turtle Cafe lunch special is Paella on the Sun Deck! A favorite XC Ski HQ tradition, Paella celebrates the world-renowned and absolutely delicious rice dish that originates in Spain, and offers skiers a hearty, flavorful (and entertaining!) feast. Bob and Lynne learned the method from Paella chef master Ayo while visiting Nerja, Spain, and are excited to serve this traditional dish to hungry skiers at XC Ski HQ. Prepared in a massive cast iron pan over an outdoor fire pit, this lunch is almost as enjoyable to watch being cooked as it is to eat! Served piping hot with Saffron-spiced chicken, shrimp and vegetables, this dish will be presented in two seatings: 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Buen Provecho!

It’s a good day to ski, eat, and go shopping!

SAT, JAN 20

Crystal Mountain: I groomed out the skating lanes today before it got warm. They turned out pretty good. Did everything but Eagles and Squirrel. Plan on doing the same thing tomorrow. There should be a couple hours of good skiing before it turns into mashed potatoes.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Buck's Run is in fabulous shape this morning. Skate lane and tracks are great. Getting a little slower as the air warms. The snow looks like it has not transformed yet, so classic skiers can get away with a warm kick was.

Rob Fairman also said the contractor's loop was in great skating shape.

Huron Meadows Metropark: 1st time on Bucks run and conditions were great. Don’t know why I haven’t done this before during low snow conditions. A good base and tracks were deep thanks to the Huron Meadow’s crew for giving us a great man-made snow ski trail. Also happy to report there is still a big pile of snow that should keep us going after the warm up. Come on out and support the great grooming they do here with the $5 trail fee for Bucks run.

Boyne Mountain: Just a quick update on our trails from earlier. Last night it seems that a vehicle decided to drive the entire length of Runway and they tore it up pretty bad. We're asking that you don't ski Runway today.

Boyne Mountain: With the recent weather there may be a few thin spots on the upper trails. The lower trails were groomed on Thursday but we have ceased grooming operations until cooler temperatures and snow return. Our base is quite compact and thick so the skate lanes should be holding up pretty well especially in the forested areas.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: The John Deere Loop, which is composed of part of the Rolling Hills and Adventure trails, is still in very good shape with the mass of manmade snow we spread out along it this past week. We were able to set deep tracks, which are holding up quite well. Overall it is in very good condition for classic and skate skiing. Rolling Hills is also in good enough condition for B skis. Due to the slightly warm temps this morning, we will not be grooming, and the trail surface is still plenty smooth. The Manitou, Wild Turkey, Mackinaw Cut, Trapper’s Cabin, and Adventure are open for rock skiing today, but are likely better for snowshoes. The practice area still has plenty of coverage for ski demos and lessons.

Stop by and demo some skin skis! Free equipment demos are available all day, every day. The synthetic mohair bases on our skin skis get tremendous grip in these warmer temps! Our sale on XC ski packages and cross country ski clothing continues with great deals on Fischer, Salomon, Smartwool, and more.

Today’s Stone Turtle Cafe lunch special is Fire Grilled Pizza! Build your own gourmet flatbread pizza and have it grilled to perfection on our wood-fired Sun Deck barbeque pit. Choose from a variety of toppings to create your own pizza masterpiece, and enjoy the satisfying flavors of delicious fire cooked crust, savory sauce, bubbling cheese and fresh toppings. Mama Mia! Served from Noon until 3:00pm.

Good luck to all the Cote Dame racers! Participants are welcome to stop by afterwards for a free facilities pass and free bowl of chili!

Hanson Hills: Great Day for a Ski Race!! Please remember the Cote Dame Marie will take place at Forbush Corner's (Frederic).

Hanson Hills Nordic Trails are Closed. Forbush has plenty of snow, perfect skate lanes and nice set track. Also XC HQ, has a 1.5km loop groomed as well, please visit our neighbors and enjoy some great Grayling Area Skiing!
