The FIS created a new rule around the maximum pole length in classic technique to preserve the use of diagonal striding. What does this mean for the citizen racer?

It all began a couple of years ago when I started skiing regularly at Forbush Corner. I was looking over the race jerseys peppering the walls of the shop and I asked Dave, “What is the Merino Muster?”

LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

SUN, FEB 17

Big M: February 15, 2019 All trails were groomed on Friday, Feb. 15 and again today, Sunday, February 17. The groomer was able to repair damage done by a snowmobile that rode on Ryberg Road and Double Bit. Good conditions.
Dave B, our groomer, can be reached at 231 848-7047.
NOTE: please do not park in front of the gate. Also, if you hike or snowshoe the trails, please stay to the side and off the ski tracks.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Got to Buck's Run early this morning (7:45) and the groomers were already well on their way to having the longer loop completely tilled and groomed. The trail leading out to the woods is pure ice, so I walked out there imagining the worst, but was more than pleasantly surprised when I saw the sugary groomed trail. It was fast and controllable. Thanks to the HM staff for continuing to provide the down state skiers such an amazing place to ski!

Boyne Mountain: Excellent skiing this weekend! Thank goodness for the sun yesterday and the break in the storm pattern!

All the lower and upper trails are open and in great shape. Vistas is still somewhat wind-blown and Deer Run is not groomed.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Two Skate Skiers in already reporting excellent conditions
Groomers are setting classic up now

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: It was a fabulous, sunny day at XC Ski HQ yesterday, with best ever conditions and lots of skiers! Today will be just as great, with mild, mid-20's temps and great conditions for classic and skating. Groomer Mike snow combed all the trails last night, and tracks are in excellent shape, so trails are ready early today for maximum enjoyment! Snow depth in the woods is 24 to 27 inches, and packed on the trail about 13 to 15 inches.

Today’s Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe the Gourmet Chili Bar! Start with our famous Classic Chili or Veggie Chili, then head a bunch of toppings and feast. Perfect for a day on the trails. Have fun skiing today!

Hanson Hills: It is Hanson Hills Classic Race Day! Interval Start race that will take you from the Trail head through Section 1 and Wanderlust, to Blue, Brown, Yellow and M-93 hills back to the Start/Finish area. Race begins at 10am. All Trails are groomed with set track. Trails are open for all skiers, we do ask that weekend skiers avoid Section 1 and Wanderlust during the duration of the race (10-11am). Lodge and trails open at 9am.

Forbush Corner: Headed out to re-groom the main trails and The Freeway Trail this morning. Come out and ski. Everything on sale in the shop.

SAT, FEB 16

Cadillac Pathway: Wonderful conditions and grooming. Better west of Seeley Rd as it gets less traffic. Ski with your best skis or your only skis. Get out and enjoy.

Vasa Trail: Wow, what purr-fect corduroy & firm, deep classic tracks today on the VASA, thanks to TART groomers, as always! Paula planned a group to meet at Timber Ridge at 10AM, but with different paces & goals, I ended up skiing the 27k solo from Headwaters on, stopping to visit with ski friends along the trail, skipping the TART Open House at the Barlett trailhead. Everyone had big smiles & how could you not, with mid-20s & only a light breeze! It doesn't get better than this, so get out & enjoy!

Black Mountain: Black Mountain has been groomed for both classic and skate skiing. The groomers were out today (Saturday) laying the classic tracks. With the deep snow base and great conditions, skiing is super for this weekend and into next week. Come out and enjoy the largest cross country skiing system in the northern lower michigan! Enjoy the views over Lake Huron and Black Lake, as well as the miles of evergreen woodlands. And don't forget to mark your calendar for the ski event of the year, March 2 and 3.

Vasa Trail: Big crowd for the excellent ski conditions and the TART Open House at the TH today. Felt like homecoming week seeing so many ski acquaintances. In fact the parking lot was way over capacity when I arrived for a noon hour ski. Conditions couldn't have been more perfect after freshening up the skate lane on the entire system with resulting speedy conditions among the best of the year, existing classic tracks looked to be in perfect condition. Was kind of funny how just before 1 pm a skier comes rushing up from the parking lot to the Open House asking if he was too late for the cocoa and homemade cookies, as he had just driven up from Lansing to attend. He wasn't too late. Was kind of sad how a big family 3-pin binding group from Grand Rapids was tailgating, and I asked them if they had found the cookies and cocoa? They saw it but thought it was just for some special group and didn't include them so by the time I said it did include them, it was a few minutes too late. I suggested they check the TART website in the future, and now they are motivated to do that.

Noquemanon Trail-Forestville: Everyday that new snow does not fall, the trail gets a little nicer. Trail is still pretty soft and narrow, but more trails have been reopened. Classic tracks were pretty fast, but not very firm because the snow is so light. Skate lane was decently fast too, just expect poles to poke through. Lots of people out on the trails today!

Bay City State Park: Snow on the ground 8" nicely tracked course with packed down area adjacent for hikers. Track had an ice glaze and oak leaves on the Tobico Marsh trail. The asphalt trail along the beach road has two sets of track, less glaze and less leaves, depending on the section skied. A friend who skied with me rated the trail marginal, however I would rate it good for being only three miles from my house.

Forbush Corner: 20" of new snow at Forbush Corner this week. Groomed all week, including last night and this morning. Report is the deck is firm but slow for today's race!

Hanson Hills: Cross Country Trail Report:
Race day at Hanson Hills! Xc groomers are out setting the course for today’s Meijer State Games of Michigan Hanson Hills Fat Bike Race. The race will take place on the Green, Blue, Brown, Red and Easy return sections of our Cross Country Trail system. Trails will still be open during the race, we kindly ask that skiers give right a way to bikers during this time. Approximately 9am-11:30am. Groomers will snow comb all skate lanes immediately following the race.

Hanson Hills Classic 2/17- online registration has closed we will see you tomorrow! Trails are looking great! Course tracks will be reset tonight.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: It snowed throughout the entire day yesterday, adding another inch or more to the great snow pack that we have received in the last week or so. After all this great snow, and with mild temps in the mid-20s today, the trail conditions will be as good as they get today! Groomer Mike will snow comb the trails this morning and reset tracks where needed. Snow depth in the woods is 24 to 27 inches, and packed on the trail about 13 to 15 inches. Fantastic skiing awaits!

Today’s Stone Turtle Day Lodge Cafe the Gourmet Chili Bar! Start with our famous Classic Chili or Veggie Chili,  then head to the Chili Bar and add your own toppings. Have your chili in a bread bowl, or help yourself to some fresh baked cornbread and real butter. You might never be the same! Enjoy the skiing, great food and drinks, shopping specials, and fun-loving company at XC Ski HQ today!
