Watt and Bender win Northshore Marathon rolleski division

Fifty-one rollerskiers (37 men, 14 women) completed the 26.2 mile Northshore Inline / Rollerski Marathon yesterday, racing from just south of Two Harbors, Minnesota, continuing along Scenic Hwy 61, rolling through the I-35 tunnels, and finishing at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC).
Duluth's Andre Watt finished one second ahead of CXC Skiing's Brian Gregg (1:18:46 to 1:18:47) to win the inaugural rollerski division (this was the first time rollerskiers were allowed to race in the Northshore Marathon).
It was a close finish for the top women as well, with Jennie Bender (Verona, WI) and Audrey Weber (Minneapolis) both receiving an official time of 1:32:26, but Bender narrowly taking the victory at the line.
The rollerski division started as a wave 30 minutes after the last wave of inline skaters. (For a comparison, there were 2,031 inline skaters entered in the race. The fastest, French skater Yann Guyader, won in 1:06:33.1.)
Rollerskiers required skis no shorter the 530mm (i.e., no inline skates with ski poles allowed), had to doublepole the first 70 meters, and had to negotiate downhills and tight turns. 700 meters before the finish line there were two 90 degree turns and one sweeping 180 degree downhill turn. There was also a 2.3 mile stretch of concrete while on I-35. The winning skiers used racing rollerskis.
It will be interesting to compare the times in the Northshore Marathon with results from the upcoming Grand Marais Rollerski Marathon on October 1 in Grand Marais, Michigan.
