WED, JAN 14

Huron Meadows Metropark: 8:00pm: the Kids Learn to Ski class just ended. Kids were treated to several inches of fresh snow! Me? I took me forever to get to the park as cars were driving a conservative 20-25 mph on the highway. But it was fun skiing in classic tracks! Adam Haberkorn is now out on the trail packing everything down for tomorrow.

Vasa Trail: When we got to the main trailhead, around 4:30PM, after driving in near-whiteout snow (100-300 foot visibility), we were not surprised to see the parking completely empty. We decided to try skiing anyway. There was 1-2" fresh snow on the trail. On Headwaters, the tracks were completely buried in places (and slow). At least the woods protected us from the winds howling above. Even in very-cold conditions, we had a good ski!

North Higgins Lake State Park: We skied the Upland Nature & Fitness Trail and the Bosom Pines Trail (despite the -5F wind chill). Very little snow under the pines near the start, but better snow on Bosom Pines Trail (further in). Shallow set tracks were filled with wind-blown snow. Downhills were challenging due to ice from the rain yesterday, some downed branches, and minimal snow to 'plow'. A bit more snow would help, but it was a good ski for us down-staters. We were surprised to see that the first part of the Upland Nature & Fitness Trail (west side) and part of the Bosom Pines Trails have been greatly widened and groomed for skating...? Interesting.

Stokely Creek: 8°, 14 mph wind at noon. Chilly. Classic skied 1 mile on Rode super blue which was slow so I covered it with 2 layers of Swix special green. No sticking or clumping, medium speed. Stayed in climbing Peterson, increased speed when yellow groomer and another skier passed. The tracks were freshly groomed, deep and solid, some with icy crust noise on the turns. From Peterson- N Sayer Lake to Interlochen, where I finally got some speed. I also scraped 3” of the grip wax off from the front side of the pocket. Evans Lake – Evans Shoreline – Cora’s crossing-Peterson, tracks got faster, great run down to the junction, and then left turn returning by Eva‘s way. 20km

Huron Meadows Metropark: Buck's Run was a mix of groomed slush and new-falling snow. I had decent control, but it was quite slow. New snow was falling hard when I left at 3 PM.

Stokely Creek: The mid January thaw was no match for our trails! We still have over a foot base in most places, plenty of fresh snow and cool temps. If there are perfect tracks - they are here at Stokely. Come out here and see for yourself. Nordic Pulse is live with grooming logs, reports and overall excitement.

Crystal Mountain: All trails are open and all will be groomed by 3pm this Wednesday. It's blustery but the snow has been consistent and we should see a few more inches by the end of the day. Bundle up!

Hiawatha Highlands: Happy Middle of the Week Snow Peeps!! Guess what?.....it's snowing again! It's definitely a colder morning....temperature currently at -13 C.

The groomer is currently out....the Red Pine system was done first thing, then the Crystal system, lastly followed by the Pinder system and the 2k Lighted. All systems have been Piston Bully groomed for both classic and skate.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: Things cooled back down overnight and the soft spots yesterday are now mostly hardened back up. The grooming team is out freshening up the trails, and while the trail head is a little icy, once you get out into the network where the hardpack has been chewed up by the teeth of the groomer, the snow is pretty darn skiable! Tracks are fairly glazed over, but there are some very nice sections out there too! Cold temps seem to be here to stay, and snow is forecasted for Friday, so all signs point to good skiing this weekend!

Hanson Hills: Lodge and Trails Open 9am.
Groomer Dan is out this morning combing the trail system and freshening things up for the day.

Reindeer Run Nordic Center: Empire snowmobile traihead corner of benzonia trail and Osborn rd. Snowbirds club groomed the trail that was closed due to logging that had been plowed this winter. By doing this out left a wide, flat, corrected deck full of snirt.
Any forecasted accumulatetion will make this a fun again place to ski.

Huron Meadows Metropark: Bucks Run only: the metro parks website states Bucks is groomed for skate and classic. While technically true, it was groomed yesterday, not today. So with the slushing up in the warm sunshine yesterday and the overnight freeze, the classic tracks are icy and debris filled. Skate deck is hard and fast. Would be nice if the groomers would use those 2 big piles of snow, but rumor has it they are short staffed this week.

Stokely Creek: Stickage is the theme for today. Warm moist snow on a colder base. Skating was my choice and it was decent glide at low speed but still slow down big hills. Poles collecting snowballs made them less useful climbing. Classic skiers better have a liquid wax dispenser attached to those fishscales or skins today!

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: The temps are now above freezing, and so the snow will continue to soften until things re-freeze tonight. Conditions are totally skiable, though will get softer and slower as the day progresses. Cold temps are in the forecast. We will not groom today in order to not make slush. The Stone Turtle Cafe is open today!

Hiawatha Highlands: Good Morning Skiers!! It's another warm, snowy morning up here....temperature currently sitting at 0 C.

The groomer was just out (back in just after 8 a.m.) freshening up the skate lane on the Pinder system and the 2k Lighted....with the ginzu.

Mabel flats to the return was groomed yesterday afternoon. Creekside still not open.

Hanson Hills: 34 degrees and raining in Grayling.
Groomer Dan combed Red, Yellow, Brown, Blue with the tidd tech this morning, and pulled off the trail once rain started. Probably best to stay off the trails. Base is holding up great, this little rainfall shouldn't hurt the trails any. Lets hope the forecasted snow follows tomorrow!
