LATEST TRAIL CONDITIONS

MON, DEC 23

45 North Recreational/Vineyard Trail: The trail was groomed again today! There are some thin areas, but overall the trail is well- covered. The skiing portion winds around the lower and upper vineyards and offers a variety of elevation. You can easily ski 10 km without being bored. I used my classic skin skis and it was fast! My friend skated and I’m sure it was also smooth skiing. Please support the grooming effort if you ski here.

Noquemanon Trail-Forestville: Sarah & I drove over to the Noque to ski today, and I enjoyed the Ojibwa trails from the 14k back to Forestville, Chiwaji, Migizi, Gookookoo & Animoosh. The trail was well-covered but hardpack, so the tracks were like luges & the downhills like slides! Afterwards, we enjoyed seeing the Danly’s home & dinner out together, before driving back to Munising in a drizzle. Fingers crossed for tomorrow’s ski!

Hanson Hills: Groomer was out rolling the trail. 6 inches of beautiful snow covered the hard packed base. Saw Fred and Jerry and they agreed Hanson has been doing an incredible job holding the snow during warm ups. I skied the m 93 hills backwards twice to see if it was feasible. Providing the next warm up is not too severe this new dump should be very helpful. I really need some consistent snow to try to whip this old body into shape. I used B skis and it was perfect.

Hanson Hills: Cross-Country Grooming Update
We’ve got 2 inches of fresh snow so far! Dan has combed the skate lane and set fresh tracks on the Yellow and Easy Return Trails.

Come enjoy the snow with us!

Hanson Hills: It is snowing!!! Grooming equipment is parked for the moment, however we have had a great base just sitting and waiting for some new refreshing snow. We are letting it accumulate at the moment. Get out and enjoy favorable temps and fresh snow!

Lodge and trails open at 9am

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: The ski conditions are marginal today, but we are expecting more snow by tomorrow. The practice field is groomed for lessons and demos today. Join us for last minute Christmas shopping, and lunch at the Stone Turtle Cafe!

Forbush Corner: Moving and grooming out the man made snow continues. Some new snow and snow in the forecast will improve good conditions on the east and west side trails. Open 9 to 5.

SUN, DEC 22

Valley Spur: Oops, wrong trail, should have been Valley Spur not Forbush today.

Forbush Corner: Not the best trail conditions since the old Jeep broke down yesterday & groomer John struggled to get it back to the shed & patch it up for another groom. The Friends of Valley Spur worked so hard to raise the funds for a new Kubota tractor but the tracks are still not available yet. If you’re skiing VS this week, Peggy is serving up bread & soup all week in the Lodge. Don’t forget to support VS with a daily or season pass. Sarah skated & I skied classic this afternoon on B, H, C, D, and a second time on B since such gorgeous hemlock along the creek.

Nubs Nob: As the noon temperatures moderated the Nubs upper red loop was very nice skiing for both skate and classic . The skate trail is getting thin on the windward side but forecasted snow should fix that . The groom deck is firm .

Vasa Trail: Conditions are way better than advertised on the Vasa Ski Trail Conditions META page. The snow received on Saturday did wonders to the coverage. Can use A skis if wanting to. Classic track is set but shallow (probably shouldn’t have set one). One of TC’s finest decided to run the 10k.

Hanson Hills: 2-3 inches of firm base. All Trails-Green-Blue-Yellow-Brown-M93 Hills were combed yesterday.
Lodge and trails open at 9am.

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: Its a cool crisp morning, and the trails are open today for classic skiing. We recommend rock skis, as there is about 3 inches of ungroomed snow to ski on, enough to have a beautiful cruise around the trail system today. We have 3-5 inches of more snow forecasted for tomorrow, so by Tuesday conditions should be quite nice! The practice field is groomed for lessons and demos today. Join us for live music by Starling Silver today from 2-4pm at the Stone Turtle Cafe!

Forbush Corner: It’s minus 14 at the corner this morning but be encouraged that temps will be rising to more tolerable temps by early afternoon. Snowmaking continues, therefore the 240 Loop, Valley and Ridge will not be available for skiing. East side and west side trails were groomed yesterday, but not enough base to do them again. However coverage is good, skate deck and classic tracks will be firm.

Reindeer Run Nordic Center: Empire snowmobile trailhead
Groomed Saturday afternoon
Thin compacted base
Scattered snirt but quite skateable for the hardcore watch for new snow.
still it was quite enjoyable
B skis or dog sleds
Really nothing to it but to do it

Dunes Golf Club: Great for classic
5"+ new on top, pretty heavy for skating
Suppose to have sun today
9 degrees at 6:50 am
More
snow predicted for tomorrow
Next warm up syndrome should bring back the crust
Think snow

SAT, DEC 21

Vasa Trail: Not sure why Vasa/Tart isn’t posting on here about trail conditions? Very skiable and good coverage throughout the trail, with a 2-3” base with 1-2” of fluffy skied in new snow on top. Solid pole plants and wasn’t hitting ground. A little bumpy and uneven in spots but that is expected with the snow depth the trail has. NO classic track. B skis recommended, could get away with A skis if you really wanted to. Best skiing was between Timber Ridge, The Rock and The Wall. Even looks like they tried using that large grooming machine that they purchased as the trail was rather wide in spots (TR > The Rock). If you groom it (and advertise it), skiers will come.

Valley Spur: Several inches of new snow overnight from north wind off the lake, so groomer was able to roll and track the system. Conditions should hold with snow showers over the next few days and colder temps.

Nubs Nob: Upper loops, red and blue , groomed with the large groomer.. Conditions are perfect. Base developed enough to get us through the upcoming mini thaw.

Elk Rapids Golf Course: With last night's fresh dusting, there is now a nice 1" base. I was in luck as a skier had been out before me today and "broke the trail." From his tracks it appeared he was clumping under the wax pocket. I was on wax-able skis, but they had no wax on them and I had no clumping - just good glide.
If you have any family or friends visiting for the holidays and they are looking to try Nordic skiing, there is a rack of free loaner skis, boots, and poles by the TH at the GC parking lot. Even a bench to try on the boots.

Interlochen Golf Course: I just drove by the golf course & it has been track set, if you want to enjoy a lovely classic ski. Not sure I’m going to have time, but someone should get out there!

Hanson Hills: ????? Trail Update ?????
Groomer Dan is out this morning, giving the trails a fresh touch-up with a dusting of new lake-effect snow! With a 2-3 inch firm base, conditions are shaping up nicely for an enjoyable day.

??? Lodge and Trails Open at 9 AM ???
Trails Available:
? Green
? Blue
? Brown
? Yellow
? M-93
? Easy Return

?? Please note: No tracks have been set.

Come out and enjoy the beautiful winter scenery! See you on the trails! ?????

Cross Country Ski Headquarters: Happy Sunny Solstice! Cold temps through the night have allowed the snow we received yesterday to set up nicely. The main trail network is not groomed or rolled, but still very skiable! Classic skiing is recommended. We have about 3 inches of unpacked snow on the trails, plenty for a rustic adventure! The practice field is groomed for the free lessson this morning at 10:30, and it's looking like a beautiful day for outdoor winter fun!

Forbush Corner: Good temperatures for making snow! Snowmaking overnight on the “Valley” and Ridge trail, and 2 to 3 inches of lake effect snow fell as well. Snowmaking will continue throughout the day in these areas then switching to the 240 Loop later in the day. Plan is to groom the east and west trails. This new snow should enhance the base that we have for the skate deck, and allow for classic tracks to be set. Welcome winter! Open 9 to 5 everyday through January 6th. Then back to normal winter hours. Closed Christmas.
