Strait Striders Narrowly Beat Headquarters at the Relays

The Strait Striders had a narrow seven-point victory over the Cross County Ski Headquarters in the Michigan Cup Relays 4,528 points to 4,521. Team NordicSkiRacer came third with 3,216 points.
Snow cover at the Cross Country Ski Headquarters was great - skiers were suprised after seeing little or no snow in the surrounding area. In the 20's under bright sunny skies and a milde breeze, each skier raced two 3.2 Km laps before tagging off the the next skier in their relay team.
The fastest relay time of the day went to the Team NordicSkiRacer.com Yvon Dufour, Dave Fanslow and Steve Kuhl with a total time of 37:29. Another all male team from the Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team - Christian Byar, Melzar Coulter, and Dell Todd - finished second fastest with a time of 38:36. A coed team consisting of Hugh Pritchard, Julie Houle, and Mike Muha finished third overall in 39:23.
The first leg of the relay was limited to classic technique - which turned out to be very problemmatic to many skiers. Parts of the tracks were icy, making purchase difficult. Many skiers had to run up the center of hills to find softer snow or, if they still didn't have kick, doublepole the uphills.
The second and third legs were freestyle - skiers could choose to skate or classic ski.
Bob Frye did an excellent job grooming the trail with the Alpina Power Tiller. And thanks to six young men from Camp Shawono we have built snow bridges across the bare spots on the Wild Turkey Trail!
Finally, Nick Baic did a great job with the timing!
