Two Wintercameandwente ski races took place today, with Eli Brown winning both (full results at the bottom). About 35 people were in attendance with most choosing to race these informal races. World record times were posted for both of these 10km (er 4km) races.
The day started out at about 9am with everyone helping to “ski in” the course at Lakes of the North golf course just east of Mancelona. From all first hand reports this location had the most snow in the lower peninsula (4 inches). The racing started at 11am under blue sunny skies at about 22F. The owners welcomed us with open arms and we had a luncheon there after the race.
The prize concept was simple but still full of drama. Each skier brought a gift to contribute and you chose your prize based on finishing order. Thankfully Eli was able to retrieve his $100 bill although the antique Santa wine bottle stopper was a sought after prize.
No matter where the racers finished there were smiles all around. Everyone was thankful for finally getting on snow.
We thank Eli Brown for organizing and Glen Goodman for obtaining permission to hold the ski race, and for racers actually skiing in the course. The concept of “Flash mob” ski racing has been established with less than 24 hours of prep.
