Joe Frye is on sabbatical from Cross Country Ski Headquarters Team and Michigan Cup competition. He been quite busy, however.
As you can see below Joe had some serious competition in the NCAA Eastern Division I Regionals in men's hammer throw. The guys who took 1st and 2nd second place are the best in the USA. The rest of the group is made up of throwers from Division I schools mostly east of the Mississippi. Compare Joe's finish to all the Big Ten Schools to get an idea of what he was up against.
In the prelims there were 3 flights of 16 throwers in each flight. Joe was in the second flight and threw well. He qualified for the finals placing 15th out of the 16 finalists. During the warm ups for the finals Joe had a magnificent throw. I would say 3 meters further than his personal record. Of course the chances were slim that he could repeat that throw in the finals. In the finals his first throw was OK, he fouled on his second throw and on his third and final throw of his NCAA career he threw his 2nd best throw ever. Even if he had thrown his personal record he still would have ended up in 14th place. The top 12 places go on the NCAA Division I Finals in Iowa. We are extremely proud of Joe and of the hard work he has put forth over the past 5 years of his college athletic career (he was redshirted in his junior year).
Joe will stay on at Belmont through next year as a Graduate Assistant Track and Field coach. He will receive his Master's Degree in Athletic Administration in May of 2012.
We believe that kids and adults who play outdoors all year around and are encouraged to participate in athletics have a great future.
All the best,
Bob & Lynne
