“WeSki”, Cross Country (XC) skiing enjoyment for families and individuals
TRAVERSE CITY, MI – In an effort to promote and support XC skiing in the Grand Traverse area and encourage community health, the Vasa Ski Club, Vasa Board and Timber Ridge Resort have combined efforts to offer skiing events in January.
WeSki is scheduled for three Thursdays in January (6, 13, 20) at Timber Ridge Resort from 6-7:30 pm. The objective of this three night event is to focus on families and individuals having fun, enjoying a healthy evening together and receiving age and skill appropriate instruction in XC skiing. Instruction will be available to all ability levels and ages. Age groups will include pre-school to kindergarten, 1-5 grades, teen and adult.
Vasa ski club members will provide instruction and general help for the WeSki program. “We have made extensive plans to expand our outreach to our community with the intent to promote XC skiing to more levels and ages of skiers. This will be a fantastic opportunity to give back to our skiing community and especially to our next generation”, says Todd Vigland, board member of the newly energized ski club.
Cross country skiing originated as a Scandinavian sport and is now very popular in Europe, Canada and northern states across the U.S. Traverse City is one of the five major geo-centers of the sport in the US and we are blessed with a premiere trail system, The Vasa trails. We also have state of the art grooming provided by TART Trails as well as Timber Ridge Resort.
Efficient technique is essential to the overall enjoyment of the sport. “The program will begin to fill in the gaps for people who wish not only to learn to ski and/or improve their technique, but afford an economical means to enjoy each other’s company and enhance a healthy lifestyle” says Linda Deneen, retired TC school counselor and Vasa board member.
