Says Pete Vordenberg, "Howling winds but clear, sunny skies. We’ve had rain and snow and ice in the past so why not some wind. Outdoor sport, you know." So it was at the 2010 Race to the Castle rollerski race. Vordenberg estimated that winds in excess of 50 mph through narrow cuts in the mountain.
Kris Freeman was the first skier to finish the 5-mile climb up the Whiteface Memorial Highway, a climb with an average grade of 8%. His time was 38:37, 39 seconds ahead of Noah Hoffman (39:16). The top women was Laura Spector in 46:58, with Morgan Arritola second in 48:02.
Ida Sargent pushing into the wind. Just before this stretch is a really narrow cut in the mountain and the wind must have been blowing over 50mph through that gap against the skiers. Sarget finished 5th overall. (Photo: Pete Vordenberg. More photos at http://nccsef.org/news/?p=1015).
