HOUGHTON, Mich. — Michigan Tech today announced the hiring of Joshua Korn as assistant coach for cross country, Nordic skiing and track and field. He will begin his duties Aug. 30.
“I’m very excited for this opportunity,” said Korn. “It will be a great challenge and every single day will be a learning process.”
Korn has worked in the ski industry for the last four years. He served as the Midwest Regional Tech Representative for Swix Sport USA starting in 2006 and the National Tech representative for Salomon USA since 2008. While working for the two brands, he provided race support in the form of wax testing and ski waxing at high level events.
Prior to that, Korn worked for Aurora Bay-Care Sports Medicine. He served as a sports training assistant creating training programs for a variety of sports including track and cross country.
Korn was a cross country and Nordic skiing athlete in college. He spent one season with UW-Eau Claire’s nationally-ranked cross country program before earning a scholarship for skiing at UW-Green Bay. He earned a bachelor’s degree in human biology with an emphasis in sports exercise science in 2005.
“I’m excited to have Josh join our staff,” said head cross country, Nordic skiing and track and field coach Joe Haggenmiller. “He brings in a good deal of experience, and I think our student-athletes will really enjoy working with him. I’m confident he’ll do a good job filling the big shoes Jason Cork left.”
In addition to Korn, the Huskies are naming Sean Beckman a graduate assistant for cross country and Nordic skiing.
Beckman was a member of the Michigan Tech cross country and Nordic skiing teams, concluding his eligibility last spring. He served as team captain of the ski team as a senior in 2009-10. Beckman has experience coaching skiing at ABR Ski Trails in Iron Mountain, Mich.
“I’m glad we were able to get Sean formally involved with our coaching staff,” said Haggenmiller. “He has been a great asset to our programs as a student-athlete by providing leadership, and I’m sure he will do the same as a coach.”
The Michigan Tech cross country teams have begun training for their 2010 seasons which begin at home on Sept. 3.
