Baic & Madion Win Michigan Cup Marathon

Skiers were more than a little worried that there would not be enough snow to hold this years Michigan Cup Marathon. Even after e-mails were sent fron the NordicSkiRacer.com e-mail list the two days before the race reassuring people that Racer Director Justin Andre and crew had snow, I still received several e-mails from people asking, "Is there really snow?" One racer called me from Grayling on Friday night as said, "There's no snow in Grayling - are you sure the race is on?"
Even I had my doubts when I pulled into the parking lot on Saturday morning and saw grass, dirt and ice everywhere.
Well folks, the race went on.
There were 181 racers.
And the trail conditions were beautiful!

Who Would Have Believed?
Rain, temperatures in the 40's, sun - terrible weather in the week leading up to the race.
And the trails? There was not a bare spot on the trail. The hard pack had been groomed for hours by Butch Stockton, ensuring a fast skiing on a surface where you could still set an edge. Even after two laps around the course, the fast downhill corners where everyone snow plowed were still snow covered.
Racers clearly benefited from Hanson Hill's rerouting of the Red Trail to eliminate the sun drenched areas that used to melt early. Everyone was very impressed that the race was held with such excellent conditions. Traverse City skiers said there was much more snow cover at Hanson Hills than on the Vasa Trail. (In fact several Traverse City people were seen skiing at Hanson Hills the next day.)

Did I Say Fast?
Did I say fast? Winner Milan Baic finished the 30K race in 1:04:17 - that's about 18 mph! Andy Triebold was second 1:05:40, just beating out David Mclean in 1:05:41.
Did I say fast? The women's overall winner, Megan Madion, finished the 15K women's race in 38:10. Wendy Anderson was second in 39:38, and Amy Powell third in 39:44.
Did I say fast? The juniors started the their 7K race 14 minutes before the seniors started. Junior men's winner Jesse Smith skied so fast that he completed the 6.5K loop back to the start area - then had to stop and wait for the senior men and women to clear the start area before he could complete the last half kilometer to the finish and win with a time of 16:40. Tom McFadden finished 2nd in 17:12, with Tyler Jenema in third in 17:17.
Did I say fast? Catarina Gulledge won the junior women's 7K race in 21:20. Janel Saudner and Jessie Hemming were close behind with times of 21:50 and 21:55.
