Straits Striders sweep top spots at Hanson Hills Classic

Many racers arrived early at the Hanson Hills 12K Classic on Sunday, February 21, 2010 with one question on their mind: Will it be a klister or a hard wax day? The previous day's warm afternoon - into the 40's - suggested the snow would have transformed - melted then refrozen overnight. To everyone's relief, the cold ground kept the trail from melting, and freshly groomed tracks simply pulled up cold snow from underneath. This is not to say that klister wouldn't have worked: One of the top skiers DID race with klister and did not ice.

The next question was: How fast will it warm up? Just like the previous day's Cote Dame Marie, the temperature was supposed to soar into the 40's. If it rose too fast, the wax that worked at the start would be too slippery by the time racers got to the M-93 hills. If a warmer wax was used at the start in anticipation of warming temperatures, the wax might drag for the first half of the race.

It turned out the clouds rolled over the bright sunny skies that greeted skiers as they arrived at the race, keeping the temperature relatively steady for the race.

Most of the course was set with double tracks. Where there was room, a third set of tracks were set. And up to 6 sets of tracks were available for the first and last half-kilometer. Watchful skiers noticed that where there were three or more tracks, typically one of the tracks was faster than the others because it had been set on Friday and had setup solid over the two nights.

An interval start race, skiers started one at a time every 15 seconds, Women starting first, then men.

Two Straits Striders topped the standings. Tracy Hardin finished over 2 minutes head of Ann Wagar, 40:09 to 42:38. Catarina Gulledge was third in 44:54.

In the men's race, Denny Paull's powerful doublepole propelled him to the top spot. Paull finished in 33:02, 2 minutes ahead of Hanson Hills/Cross Country Ski Shop skier John Gravlin (35:04). Third was John Goble in 35:23.
