The Central Cross Country Ski Association Adaptive Program is pleased to announce the receipt of a $10,000 grant from The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for the furtherance of the CXC Adaptive Cross Country Program. The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research, and by improving the quality of life for individuals with spinal cord injuries and diseases.
CXC recently launched a cross country ski program for individuals with all types of physical disabilities; visual impairments, amputations, debilitating diseases, and spinal cord injuries. Adaptive skiers travel over the snow on either traditional cross country stand up equipment or on sit skis; essentially a system with a chair mounted on standard cross country skis.
"Receiving financial and intrinsic support from the Reeve foundation is a tremendous boost to our emerging program", commented Scott Wilson, CXC Adaptive Director. "The Reeve foundation continues to have a huge impact in supporting people with disabilities over the many years since Christopher's tragic accident and resulting paralysis. CXC is very proud of our ongoing relationship."
The CXC Adaptive program is also supported by The US Adaptive Ski Team, US Paralympics, Wisconsin Pathways to Independence, Becker Law of Madison, Isthmus Engineering, The University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology, Fastenal, Swix ski poles, Salomon, Rossignol, and Fischer skis, TOKO wax, Madison Winter Festival, H & H Electric, American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation, BadgerBOTS, Rockwell Automation, Badger Fabrication, PRO Metal Works, and a host of private and individual donors.
CXC has opened thirteen Opportunity Centers throughout the Midwest and beyond, each offering a full range of adaptive cross country ski equipment, appropriate groomed trails, indoor and outdoor accessible facilities, and instruction. All services are at no charge to beginning adaptive cross country skiers and their families. The expectation is to be operating 50 such Centers in the next three to four years in the Midwest.
