Milan Biac (Traverse Nordic Ski Club) and Natalie Dawson (Team NordicSkiRacer.com) were crowned champions of the 10K men's and 5K women's Holley Cup classic race at Otsego Ski Club in Gaylord, Michigan today. The Holley Cup is the first points-race of the season for the Michigan Cup Series.

Milan's time of 29:42 easily beat 2nd place finisher Denny Paull's time of 31:50. Christopher Miller came in just behind Denny with a time of 31:53.

Natalie Dawson finished first with a time 19:56, beating out Caterine Gullridge and Ivanka Baic-Berkshire's times of 21:44 and 22:24.

Two women chose to do the longer men's race. Cassidy Edwards finished 7th overall in the 10 km in 33:25 and Julia Coulter was not far behind in 10th place with a time of 34:36.

The race was held over a 2.5 km trail with a nice distribution of hills and flat. The men did 4 laps, the women two. The trail was well groomed with double tracks, although the snow was a little soft. A short section re-routed because of a last minute pond flooding was somewhat softer. Racers were warned not to get too close to the inside of corners because of the deep, soft snow just off track.

Temperatures were on the cool side, probably around 9 degrees F at start time and warming slightly during the race. There was little wind. A light snow fell in the hour leading up to the start but stopped once the race was underway.

Kick waxing was unexpectedly difficult for a few skiers. Although the temperatures suggested a "greenish" wax, the high humidity in the snow and air required a warmer, "bluish" wax. Many skiers had to resort to herringboning one of the hills because they missed the wax.

The course was not too technically difficult and is an excellent course for novice racers. Race Director Nick Baic said he'd like to have the same course next year. The multi-lap format was welcomed by many because they could experiment with different techniques on different laps to see if they made any difference. Others thought it was a little monotonous.

The awards ceremony was held during lunch for the racers.
