Paull and Dawson win cold Garland Gripper

Denny Paull and Natalie Dawson were king and queen of the Garland Gripper Classic Race at Garland Resort on Saturday, January 17, 2009. Strait Strider Paull finished the four-lap 10 Km senior men's classic course in 34:37.  Traverse City's Cliff Onthank double-poled his way around the entire course to take second in 34:44. Todd Vigland, also of Traverse City, finished just behind Onthank in 34:39.

NordicSkiRacer's Natalie Dawson took first in the senior women's two-lap 5 km race in 20:53. Tracy Hardin of Strait Striders took second in 21:02. Grand Rapids Nordic's Amy Todd skied into third in 22:13.

Ross Williams and Maria Frick were prince and princess of the Garland Gripper. Williams was the fastest junior in the 5 Km race, winning in 17:53. Frick took the honors as the fastest junior women, finishing in 22:25.

The course was nicely groomed with a double track. The groomer picked up the tracker on all sharp corners so skiers would be able to get around without worrying about getting caught in the tracks - very much appreciated!. The tracks ended at just the right place and restarted on the other side of the corner in exactly the right place. Perfect.

It was another cold race, around 5-6F at start time. There was a light breeze but the course was mostly sheltered from the wind.

The men started first over a undulating flat area to a narrow point where the course climbed the only real hill . Although the hill was strideble most skiers seemed to herringbone it. The junior men started two minutes after the senior men, and the junior and senior women headed out another two minutes later.

According to one skier's altimeter, each lap featured around 60 feet of climbing. The women and juniors climbed 120 feet; the men, double that.

Cookies, coffee, tea and balloons after the race. The big Garland lunch feast is a feature of the Garland Glide race on Sunday.
