Hanson Hills/Cross Country Ski Shop put it all all down on the snow, walking away with six out of nine podium finishes at the Michigan Cup Team Time Trial at Hanson Hills on Saturday, January 10, 2009. The Cross Country Ski Headquarters took two of the teaming podiums. Team NordicSkiRacer grabbed the last podium place. Strait Striders and Grand Rapids Nordic were left out in the cold.
The fast team of the day was HHCCSS's "Subject to Change", featuring Ed Anderson, Glenn Goodman and Bob Smith. "Beauty and the Beasts", another HHCCSS team with John Gravlin, Curt Peterson and Gussie Peterson, and the second fastest time over and won the Co-Ed Division in 50:30.
Sweeping the top three spot, HHCCSS also won the Women's division. "The Snow Bunnies" (Terri Pomfrit, Ann Wagar, and Sara Web) won in 1:03:46.
The top five women skiers, Gussie Peterson, Kaitlyn Patterson, Terri Pomfret, Kelli Kirk, Kelly Mikolajczyk finished within 32 seconds of each other.
Conditions were great for the race. Skiers who wanted to race with less traffic on the course raced earlier. Racers hoping for faster snow skied later, as the temperature increased to around 20F from a low of 15 at the start.
Each team had three members. Each member could start their leg (time trial) anytime between 10am and noon. A few skiers were a bit late when they couldn't find the start (the starting area was in the middle of the trail system rather than near the lodge).
Only Michigan Cup team points were awarded for this race; no Michigan Cup individual points were given out.
It was vegetarian for lunch: Vegetable soup, salad and rolls - a nice change for the racing vegetarians.
