Baic and Asmus win Chestnut Valley Freestyle

Milan Baic and Vicki Asmus took victory in the 12km Chestnut Valley Freestyle race under excellent trail and weather conditions. Baic's held off Michigan Tech freshman Jesse Smith by 13 seconds, 30:11 to 30:24. Junior Mac Brennan (Team NordicSkiRacer) finished third in 30:29, just another 5 seconds back.

Asmus handily beat the field in 36:19. Strait Strider's Tracy Hardin was second in 42:10 followed closely behind by HHCCSS's Gussie Peterson in 42:44.

In the 12 Km junior division, Spencer Hogan from Sault Ste Marie won the J1 division. Mac Brennan was first in the OJ class.

In the 6km skate race, Brady Brennan (Team NordicSkiRacer) was the fastest girl and won the J1 division. Hannah Rickard took first in J2s, and Katie Todd won J3. Matthew Westerman and Dan Wood won the J2 and J3 male divisions, respectively.

It should be noted that the junior racers finished this race then heading over to Boyne Highlands for a second race, a Junior Olympic Qualifier freestyle sprint race.

The low overnight was down around 8F, warming to around 18F at race time. The trail was exceptionally wide ands "World Cup quality". Groomers from Nubs Nob groomed the trail at midnight to ensure the course would setup firmly by race time. The sun was out for the entire race.

The course was a 3km loop, skied twice by the younger juniors and four times by everyone else. The course was gently rolling except for two short steep uphills. Several 180 degree turns kept people agile on their feet. The finish was on a 50 yard uphill that made for some exciting finishes.

Food? Sloppy Joe's and chips - and some potent brownies!
