Lynne Witte of Mt. Clemens learned to appreciate the beautiful parts of the AuSable River Canoe Marathon that begins in the streets of Grayling, Mich., and ends in Oscoda, Mich. But it took a while.
She admires the sights and sounds of the river and the stars on clear nights. A few years ago, she marveled at a distant lightning storm that danced across the pitch-black sky.
The 120-mile race always is tough but it has become a lot less stressful over the years. Witte will be entering her 29th AuSable when the race gets under way with a quarter-mile run to the water at 9 tonight.
