As one participant wrote:

I ski for the midwest team and was in the pack when the crash happened. My teammate was on my right, and was out of the tracks between me and another guy. The guy stepped on my teammate's skis and he started the crash. It was bad and he said that it felt like a train running into him.

At least on Great Lakes Division skier got caught in the muddle...
