HAYWARD, WI (January 27, 2008). Perfectly scripted weather and great snow offered a beautiful back drop to the Sunday classic races at the CXC SuperTour. After single digit lows, the men went out in upper teens with azure skies and unchanging snow throughout the 15km mass start race.
The 15 lane arrow start narrowed down after ½ km in steps to double tracks that continued around most of the 7.5km loop. A small group of men moved off the front early, and were able to extend the gap as the race progressed. Creating the SuperTour Trifecta for the first time, Marius Korthauer UAF was able to squeak out a 1 second win over Zach Violet.
It was Marius’ third win in as many SuperTour races, including sprint and free and classic distance races. A great week for Marius! Zach was coming off a second place near win in the Noquamenon 51km classic the day before. An impressive feat in itself. Zach was followed by Bryan Cook, Atomic/Swix, with Andre Watt CXC a close fourth.
With temperatures in the upper 20’s, the warmest day northern Wisconsin has seen in 3 weeks, the women’s 10km classic went to Factory Team member Kristina Strandberg wearing bib number 1. Kristina was able to win the Noquamenon 51km classic in Marquette the day before, drive in the night to Telemark, and wake up quickly enough to lead the race pretty much from start to finish.
In a chase very much like the men, a small group off the front narrowed down to Kristina, Morgan Smyth NMU 2 seconds back in second, Aurelia Korthauer UAF a short gap back in third. A good day for UAF and the Korthauer family. Rossignol’s Martina Stursova finished in a close fourth, 3 seconds back from Aurelia.
U23 winners were Morgan Smyth NMU/USST and Martin Banerud NMU sixth overall male.
