Maclean wins 2nd race at Garland; Powell dominates

Amy Powell dominated the women's 8km Garland Glide Freestyle: Her winning time of 33:33 was 1:28 faster than second place finisher Tracy Hardin. Yesterday's Garland Gripper winner Wendy Anderson skied in third in 35:11, 11 seconds behind Hardin.

Julia Otwell was the fastest Junior girl with a time of 35:46, just beating Emily Westerman by a second. Maria Frick was third in 38:23.

David Maclean made it a double this weekend, taking victory in both Saturday's classic race and Sunday's freestyle. Billed as an 18 km race, the course was closer to19 km according to one skiers GPS. Maclean won in 57:03 to beat junior phenomenon Mac Brennan by 36 seconds. In a photo finish, Andy Triebold edged out Dell Todd for third in a time of 58:39.

William Ross won the boys 8km race in 29:59. Greg Brown took second in 32:35, with Raymond Innis only one second back in third in another close finish.

A little lake effect snow gently fell before the race, then the skies cleared one more day. Temperatures were close to 0F as racers arrived, and stayed in the single digits during the race over the 8.5km race course. Fortunately, the wind was minimal making the cold bearable - though not many skiers went out skiing after the race!

The course had excellent grooming - the Garland standard - a featured a new course segment that traveled through a pine forest. Racers were served a pasta lunch before the awards ceremony.

Wax of the day? Swix LF-3 cold powder was excellent according to reports. Toko LF Blue and Start Green both worked well, as did Solda F-15 Blue covered in S-20 powder.
