Maclean and Anderson win Garland Gripper

Surprise - sun! Although the forecast included a high probability of snow, there was only bright sunny skies to greet skiers arriving for Garland Gripper 10km race. The sun made the cool 10F temperature more bearable.

The course was a 2.5km loop. Girls, women, and junior boys did two loops for 5km; senior men skied the loop four times for 10km. After a wide start area, the course quickly narrowed onto the main uphill in the race. Most skiers choose to herringbone the moderately steep short hill. Few skiers were able to stride it. The rest of the course had an excellent double track, with plenty of room between tracks.

The rest of the course consisted of gentle ups and downs with several moderately sharp turns. Faster skiers who could quickly pick a line through lapped racers had multiple opportunities to put time on others, just as bike racers in a sprint need to negotiate between other bikers. The wide spaces between tracks provide more than one racer the space needed to pass a slower skier.

Of course, not every passed skier was happy about it...

Peter Johnson of Grand Rapids Nordic passes Strait Striders' Dave Whitlock on the fourth lap. Peter and Dave traded places several times during the race, but Peter persevered in the end.

XCHQ skier Wendy Anderson come out on top in the 5km women's race with a time of 19:27. Tracy Hardin of Strait Striders arrived second, 42 seconds behind Anderson. Just 6 seconds behind Hardin was Team NordicSkiRacer Emily Flynn, still recovering from broken ribs from a pre-season biking injury.

Julie Otwell had the fastest junior girls' time and was the winner of the J1 division in 21:47. J3 skiers Maria Frick was only 21 seconds back. In third just behind Frick was Hannah Meachum, also a J3, in 22:27.

Lundington's David Maclean continued his Michigan Cup winning streak by taking the 10km winner's podium in 31:08. Strait Strider Denny Paul and NordicSkiRacer Steve Kuhl came in second and third with times of 31:44 and 31:52. OJ Junior Will Ward also raced the 10km and finished 6th overall in 31:17.

J1 Mac Brennen of Team NordicSkiRacer had the fastest 5km time of the day. His 17:11 time was 8 seconds ahead of second place finisher Ross Williams (J2). J1 Mark Alanson was third in 17:56.

Ivan Mikhailav leads Theo VonWallmenich into the finish.
