Maclean and Gebhart win Nubs Nob Freestyle

David Maclean and Daniela Gebhart won the Nubs Nob 12km Freestyle today under excellent trail conditions. Mcclean's time of 30:50 was 18 seconds faster than second place finisher Milan Baic. Junior Mac Brennan finished a strong third in 31:51.

In the women's race, Gebhart finished in 39:26, besting second place finisher Tracy Hardin's time of 40:08. Taking third was Gussie Peterson in 40:59.

Ross Williams and Julia Otwell topped the juniors in the 6km event. Ross (17:16) beat out Greg Brown (18:55) and Llyod Anderson (19:02) for first in the 5km race.

Otwell's 20:28 was best among junior girls. Ciesla Hannah finished second in 20:44, with Emily Westerman in third in 21:13.

Nubs Nob 9km Freestyle cross country ski race

Temperatures warmed into the 30's during the race under cloudy skies. The start of the race took place between the Nubs Nob ski lodge and the Yellow Chairlift in the alpine area, with many downhillers skied over to watch the start and finish. The course ran close to the alpine slopes in a couple of areas, increasing the number of spectators.

The narrow, slightly downhill start area and number of racers caused race Director Nick Baic to rule that racers had to doublepole the first section of the course (about 150 yards) until the course rounded a pond and widened.

The racers than entered a two-way section of trail that climbed, descended, climbed, and descended again until reaching a loop at the end of the trail. Making a sharp left, racers climbed a steep V1 section that took the better racers 50-60 seconds to climb. The trail than dropped and curved around back to the two-way section of trail to return toward the ski lodge.

Just before reaching the lodge, the course veered down a hill onto Nub Nobs' night loop before heading back toward the lodge. At the end of the night loop - and at the top of a short, steep, nasty V1 climb, the 5km racers heading up a gradual climb to the finish. The 9km skiers head to the right and skied the entire course a second time.

Nubs Nob Freestyle cross country ski race

Several skiers were worried that the saftey of the two-way section trail since skiers ascending and descending around corners on opposite sides of the trail could potentially cause collisions. Baic groomed a classic track down the middle of the trail and gave strict instructions for racers to "stay left". Fortunately, Nub Nob's wide trail system provide enough room for opposing skiers to get by. Everyone successfully negotiated the two-way section without incident. There was some congestion on the uphills as faster climbers had a difficult time passing slower skiers without impeding descending skiers.
