The DNR is planning on logging 631 acres in the area in an around the VASA trail.
The logging will have a direct impact on the trail. To quote the DNR "Access is generally good via county roads but access within the compartment is limited because many of the well placed roads are utilized by the VASA ski trail. Management activities will need to utilize portions of the trail for access."
The links to the DNR plan for the Vasa http://www.midnr.com/Publications/pdfs/ForestsLandWater/Cmpt_Reviews/Traverse_City/2009/Cmpt042Nar.pdf
If you look at the map on the last page you will notice that not a single section of the trail will escape clearcutting or extensive logging.
The DNR is having an open house to allow the public to comment about the logging plan on November 28, 2007 3:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at the Traverse City Field Office on 970 Emerson Rd. Written comments are suggested as they become a part of the record.
In addition write the chair of the DNR Natural Resource Committee Keith J. Charters at 126 Spring Hill Road.Traverse City, MI 49686 to express your concern about logging on the VASA.
