A familiar trail bridge will get a makeover in the next few weeks. The former railroad trestle bridge over County Road 633 in Leelanau County will receive major safety improvements for motorists as well as Leelanau Trail users.
The new bridge will have a longer span, which will remove the concrete abutments from the road shoulders. The new bridge deck will also meet current standards for trails and will be 14-feet wide (former bridge was only 10-feet wide.)
Construction on the project began yesterday. The trail and road will be closed for about 3 weeks. There is a signed detour for the trail that routes trail users along the road shoulders of Bingham Road and County Road 641.
TART and the Leelanau County Road Commission are partners on this project. The Leelanau County Road Commission received a federally funded safety grant for the project and TART paid for the local match. Our collaboration with the Leelanau County Road Commission may allow us to access federal funds for future Leelanau Trail improvements.
Enjoy the sunshine,
Missy
