Forbush Corner Nordic hosted the Memorial Classic honoring Michigan Cup co-founder Chris Weingartz who passed away several years ago. Chris was a founding member of the ULLR Nordic ski team, which morphed into ULLR/MAYBERRY and ultimately Team NordicSkiRacer. Ninety-two racers toed the line which featured 27 Juniors mostly from the Vasa Raptors team. The race course used practically all of the East trails at Forbush and it skied exceptionally well.
Ed Roe of Team VASA won the 11K men’s race in 37:28 and Erica O’Hearn also of Team VASA took top honors in the women’s race in 46:51. Grand Rapids Nordic (GRNST) won the day for the men led by Ryan Harris in 3rd, Eric Parrott, 5th, Denny Paull, 6th, Glenn Goodman, 9th, and Jim Beebe, 12th for a total of 35 points. Brumbaugh Cup leader, Hanson Hills/Cross Country Ski Shop (HHCCSS), had to settle for second on the day 46 points. Michael Davis was the top skier for HHCCSS in 2nd, followed by Drew Moore, 4th, John Gravlin, 8th, Steve Seager, 13th, and Robin Luce, 19th, for a total of 46 points. Team NordicSkiRacer finished third for the men led by Yvon Dufor, 7th, and Allen Sorgenfrei, 11th with 71 points. Team VASA was fourth and Cross-Country Ski Headquarters (CCSHQ) finished 5th with 90 points.
CCSHQ ruled the day for the women, placing all three skiers in the top 5. Wendy Anderson was 3rd, Deanna Spencer, 4th, and Elizabeth Osteen, 5th for a total of 12 team points. Second place, 20 points, was a tie between Team VASA and HHCCSS. Erica O’Hearn won the race overall and Leslie Maclin was 9th for Team VASA. Rebecca Davis was second by 12 seconds and Christine Seager, 8th, for HHCCSS. Katie Harris and Julie Olson came in 6th and 7th to give GRNST 23 points and Team NSR finished 5th with 30 points.
So on this day, HHCCSS held on to first place overall with 434 points while GRNST gained 8 points rising to second place with 492 points. Team NSR remained in 3rd, 618 points, Team VASA, 4th, 714 and CCSHQ, 5th, 728.
Final team rosters were due in January 31, so I will be rescoring races 1-6 this week. Including any new members added by each team since the original roster submission on December 31. Look for updated results by the end of the week. Results for the Chris Weingartz Memorial Classic included all additional skiers on team rosters.

The Michigan Cup Series has three team awards: The Baic Cup for best junior team, the Brumbaugh Cup for best senior team, and the Michigan Cup for the best overall team.
The Brumbaugh Cup is a team scored competition with each designated race counting each team's top 5 senior male skiers and top 3 senior female skiers. It is scored like a cross-country running event with first place receiving 1 point; down through the max of 35 male skiers (7 teams x 5 skiers) and 21 female skiers (7 teams x 3 skiers). The lowest point total wins each race and the lowest point total of all designated races wins the Brumbaugh Cup. The designated Brumbaugh races include those races where there is a single Michigan Cup points paying event.
