Forbush Corner surprised everyone racing the Chris Weingartz Memorial Classic Race by including parts of the trail system that haven't been used in years,Chris Weingartz Memorial Classic Race. "Rollerscoaster" - one of the original trails put in by Dave Forbush - was a welcome addition, as was "Lil Coaster" toward the very end of the race. Unsuspecting racers who didn't look at the trail map were surprised by the long hill on Lil Coaster!
Although it looks like a bowl of spaghetti, race officials were on hand to direct traffic where it wasn't obvious. A couple people had to turnaround when they thought they were heading to the finish instead of climbing Lil Coaster first. The course was a great classic course. One could diagonal stride all the hills if you had good grip and technique.
Overall, it was an excellent course and racers loved it!
The original trail map had several errors and was somewhat confusing - I corrected and enhanced the course map and included it below.
Updated and revised course map. Trails with dashed lines were not used in the race.
It snowed prior to and during the race. Although the course was doubled tracked, 95% of the time skiers skied in the track where the skiers ahead had packed down the fresh snow. The other track, filled with snow, was slower. Cutting corners was rarely faster because of the fresh snow outside the track.
In the 12km race, Erica O'Hearn strided to victory in 46:51. Rebecca Davis (47:03) and Wendy Anderson (52:57) came in second and third.
Edward Roe (37:28) won the men's 12km division, with Michael Davis (38:49) and Ryan Harris (39:04) the next two on the podium.
There was also a 6km race. Juniors Ava Zeratsky (23:00), Emma Dykstra (24:07), and Lindsay Smith (25:19) were the top three women. Olin Kasperowicz (19:50), Liam Wierzba (20:05), and Robert Myler (21:10) topped the men's 6km division.
