Race officials arrived at Huron Meadows Metropark in Brighton, MI this morning expecting most but not all of the Buck's Run trail to be groomed for today's Frosty Freestyle - the groomers had said only 1.8km was groomed at the end of Thursday. It was a surprise to get feedback from skiers warming on the course to discover the groomer took advantage of 4 inches of new snow on top of the man-made snow to extended the course another 0.3km!
Racers in the long distance race skied 6 laps for about 13km. The shorter event raced two laps or about 4.5km.
Glenn Goodman (Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team) and Karin Rand (Team NordicSkiRacer) topped the podium in the 13km. Goodman skied away from Team NordicSkiRacers Yvon Dufour and Kevin Vazquez for the win. Goodman finished in 43:02; Dufour finished second in 43:20, followed by Vazquez in 43:52.
Rand finished third overall, beating all but the top two men, to win the women's division with a time of 43:29. University of Michigan Nordic Ski Club's (but skiing for Team NordicSkiRacer) Sarah Duclos (46:34) and Elizabeth Callison (49:04) took second and third.
13km Winner Glenn Goodman and second place Yvon Dufour. Third place Kevin Vazquez was out skiing!
Second place Sarah Duclos, first place Karin Rand, and third place Elizabeth Callision, showing off winnings: Coolers, hats, and mugs!
Elliot Busta (19:00), Andrew Reed (21:25), and Rayne Newmister (23:46) were the top three in the Frosty Freestyle 4.5 race. Sage Brownell (19:32), Shirel Temkin (20:50), and Gwendolyn Wright (21:28) topped the podium for the women.
The race course featured deep tracks for the two skiers who classic skied and for a number of other skiers who doublepooled or marathon skated, or used the tracks on downhills. The skate lane was wide with a firm base covered by softer fine granular snow, making for very controllable skiing. The temperature at the start was 26 with very little wind, with the temperature slowly climbing during the race. The Huron Meadows groomers did an outstanding job building the course!
All racers received sunglasses and lunch.
