It was around 6F at the start of the 2024 Cote Dame Marie at Hanson Hills Recreation Area in Grayling, MI, but the trail was firm and fast...for cold snow. The home team, Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop, were well represented in the podium positions.
Mandy Paull (Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop) was the top women in the Michigan Cup Women's 13km race in 47:08. Mariah Frye (Cross Country Ski Headquarters) and Rebecca Davis (Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop) followed with times of 48:32 and 50:06.
Jorden Wakeley (Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop) crushed everyone in the Michigan Cup Men's 26km race, finishing first in 1:12:43, almost 10 minutes ahead of second place Ryan Harris (1:22:12, Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team). Harris just edged out Kevin Tarras by one second (1:22:13).
In the Michigan Cup Junior 7km, Olin Kasperowicz was the top male finisher with a time of 25:39. Jack Lindwall was second in 26:59, followed by Zack Dunne in third in 30:42.
For the junior females, Annie Paulson fought off Ell DeBruyn to take first in 31:42 vs. 31:49. 6 Sage Brownell was third in 40:34.
In the Citizen Division, there are both skate and classic champions. In the skate, Tad Hill, Jason Bergwall, and Michael Fehrenbach were the top three in 33:36, 34:35, and 34:55. For the women, it was Cecili Bugge, Lindsay Klee, and Jennifer Stein in 39:45, 46:13, and 50:40.
In the classic race, Jeremy Treadwell, Phillip Wadsworth, and Mike Appel took the top three spots in 41:20, 47:19, and 47:30. Katie Fuelling and Cindy Turik were first and second for the women in 52:15 and 1:03:39
