What's new for the 2022-2023 Michigan Cup?

The Michigan Cup Committee had a short but productive meeting this summer. Here are the highlights!

Skiathlon!

The Winter Wolf 2x6k Skiathlon replaces the team ski day at Hanson Hills Recreation Area. This was a suggestion by members of the Committee and Race Director Justin Andre jumped at the chance to hold the Michigan Cup's first skiathlon. There will be a 6km classic leg, a transition zone, and a 6km skate leg.

Ethan Goss, new coach for Traverse City

Ethan Goss has been named the new head coach for the Traverse City Raptors high school team. Goss moved to Traverse City in 2019 and raced at the University of Vermont, graduating in 2016. Goss more recently won the 2019 and 2020 34k North American Vasa Classic.

Goss asked if Michigan Cup race directors could standardize junior races distances to 5-7K and to reduce fees to $10-$15.

27k Classic returns to the North American Vasa

By popular demand, The 27k Classic returns to the North American Vasa on Sunday. The 16k classic is still the designated Michigan Cup points race - no points will be awarded for the 27k Classic.

Junior National Qualifiers added to Michigan Cup

Typically, Junior National Qualifiers (US Ski & Snowboard races) are not on the Michigan Cup calendar. A main reason is that they are never held in the Michigan's Lower Peninsula. This year is different: JNQ races will be held in Traverse City the last weekend on January. Since they will be local, and non-US Ski & Snowboard skiers can purchase a one-day membership to US Ski & Snowboard, the committee voted to add the races to the calendar. These will be full point races.

Beech Nuts Jr. Nordic Race added to schedule

A kid's race (participation points only) has been added February at Nubs Nob. We're going to pull together a list of all the local kid's races a publish it later.
