The last junior race still needs to be run, but the top junior and senior champions for the year are ready to call!
For the Juniors, William Haapala (Vasa Ski Club) will win the overall Michigan Cup Men's Junior Champion title. Haapala has won every race he has entered - 6 in total - for a perfect score of 1,000. Arianne Olson (Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team) takes the title Michigan Cup Women's Junior Champion. Olson has won 7 races plus a 3rd and a 4th - also getting a perfect score of 1,000. (Scoring is the best five races).
There is still competition for the remaining junior places and we'll see what shakes out after this weekend's Muffin Race.
In the senior division, Jorden Wakeley wins the title of Michigan Cup Men's Senior Champion with a perfect score of 1,000. Wakely won 6 of the 8 races he entered. In second place is Brad Baas (Team NordicSkiRacer) with 997 points. Baas won 2 races, place 2nd in two, and took a third in another race. In third place is Michael Davis (Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop) with 995 points. Davis won one race and placed high in the standings in the 8 other events he raced.
For the first time ever in Michigan Cup history, we have TWO women who will take the title of Michigan Cup Women's Senior Champion! Both Jordyn Ross (Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team) and Jamie Chapman (Vasa Ski Club) finished the season with 998 points. Generally, there is a tie breaker: Whoever beat the other in head-to-head competition would take the overall title. But the two skiers did a completely different set of races, never racing together in the same race! There is a second tie breaker: who has the highest total Michigan Cup points across all the races they did. But each racer did the same number of races and received exactly the same number of points across all races!
With two firsts, there's no second place finisher. In third place is Rebecca Davis (Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop) with 996 points, just a couple points behind.
Congratulations to our 2022 Michigan Cup Champions!
