Skiing community mourns loss of longtime skier and racer
Longtime skier and racer Larry Kanaby passed away Friday, December 10, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer. Personally knowing Larry as a fierce competitor and fighter winning most of his battles, I was betting on Larry. Unfortunately, as cancer usually does, it took Larry's life much too early. Larry will be missed by many, everyone it seemed knew Larry Kanaby from Bad Axe, not just skiers!
Larry Kanaby, always in the middle of things!
Larry was a Michigan Cup skier and competitor for over 30 years and a valued and loyal member of the XCHQ ski team. Larry was always up for a ski trip "up north" living in Bad Axe, he would say "I have to drive South to go North." Larry would always be ready to greet everyone he met on the trail or the shop / lodge. You could surely say he was a genuine "friendly" skier. When you were in Larry's presence he had an energetic kind of personality that was contagious! Oh, and I have to mention when you skied with Larry whether it was racing or training, he had only ONE speed - full bore, I know a few who can attest to that!
When Larry wasn't kicking your butt, he was busy at his shop building cabinets, Larry was a master cabinet builder with his beautiful work gracing many homes and business.
Larry, we sure are going to miss you!
There will be visitation for Larry on Thursday, December 16th from 2:00 - 8:00pm, and Friday, December 17 from 11:00am - 3:00pm with a service at 3:00pm. at the MacAlpine Funeral Home in Bad Ax.
