Curt Peterson from the Vasa Ski Club reports that, unfortunately, the Dec. 12th Lakes of the North Freestyle race has been cancelled. Not knowing if the The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) health order would be extended after Dec 8th and the need to purchase materials prior to that date are the main decision drivers. The health order limits outside gatherings to 25 people or less. The order started Nov 18.
Says Peterson, "The Lakes of the North and Settings restaurant are more than willing to re-schedule if there is a slot available later in the winter." There are a number of open days available on the calendar.
The race has been historically been blessed is deep powder (bring the soft skis!) or tricky hard pack (bring the stiff skis!). It's always been a great first race of the season because of the relatively easy terrain on the course.
Lakes of the North was going to be the season opener for the Michigan Cup Cross Country Ski Racing Series. The Forbush Freestyle at Forbush Corner in Frederic, Michigan is still scheduled for Sunday, December 13 and will know open the season.
