Nordiq Canada bans medium and high fluoro waxes

Nordiq Canada (formerly called Cross Country Ski de fond Canada) just posted their fluoro waxing policy, and it's effective this ski season. The policy

1. Bans the use of medium and high fluoro waxes to Tier 2 sanctioned events (e.g., Provincial Cups, Provincial Champs, Nordiq Canada sanctioned events)
2. Bans the use of medium and high fluoro waxes to Tier 1 sanctioned junior, non-FIS events

To make sure everyone is clear on the policy, Nordiq Canadsa lists all approved waxes.

The Directive

At the December 2018 Nordiq Canada Board meeting the Board asked the CEO to review a policy to eliminate use of fluoro waxes for Tier 2 events. In March 2019 the Events Committee reviewed and agreed to the following:

The Recommendation

Nordiq Canada revise the Nordiq Canada Competition Registration and Sanctioning Policy (2.2.1) to include the provision that in all Tier 2 sanctioned events medium and high Fluoro waxes are not permitted. Further, the recommendation would extend to include all Junior aged, non-FIS categories in Tier 1 sanctioned events. [Note: The listed Policy document had not been updated as of this posting]

Guidelines

For all Tier 2 races (Provincial Cups, Provincial Champs, Nordiq Canada sanctioned events) the Nordiq Canada Fluoro policy would apply. This means that:

• High Fluoro (HF) or Medium Fluoro (MF) glide waxes, including HF or MF powders, pucks, blocks and liquids are NOT permitted.
• Cold weather powder additives and hardeners are NOT permitted.
• Grip powders are NOT permitted
• Does not pertain to grip wax

1. Since the jurisdiction of Tier 2 races is a shared responsibility between Divisions and Nordiq Canada, a common rule and disciplinary process for coaches and athletes will be developed
2. At competitions where Tier 1 and Tier 2 level races take place at the same time the policy would apply to all U18 and below age categories that are not sanctioned by FIS
3. At competitions where categories are combined for seeding purposes the policy guidelines would align with the highest category in the combined class
4. The program would be self-governed by all coaches, technicians, parents and athletes
5. Assigned Technical Delegates will not be responsible for enforcing the Fluoro Policy

Pros and Cons of the Flouro Waxes

Wax	Pros	Cons
High Fluoro	It is often much faster (repels water and dirt) to have skis with fluoros on them either in powder, liquid, puck or gel form. The exception may be in very cold or dry snow but even that could be debated.	High fluoro wax - high cost and safety concerns. Time consuming to apply Places undue emphasis on technology rather than the skier during developing years
Low or non-fluuro	Much lower cost Better safety plus it’s generally easier to apply for your average parent or ski club. Less stress for them ;) If a big Club has a 30 plus kids racing at an event it makes it easier and requires less testing.	A low fluoro or non fluoro wax will be slower especially as it gets warmer or snow is dirtier. Because it can be much slower athletes, coaches and techs may be tempted to push the boundaries of any policy in place.
