Five races are under the belt and the current Michigan Cup standings as of the finish of the Cote Dame Marie are out.
Sam Holmes (Vasa Ski Club) leads the Michigan Cup for the senior men. Although Jay Woodbeck (Team NordicSkiRacer) has the same number of Michigan Cup points (993), Holmes has beat Woodbeck in three out of five races, giving Holmes the lead. Glenn Goodman (Vasa Ski Club) is a little behind with 960 points.
It should be noted that Alex Vanias (Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop), currently in 17th place with 600 points, has won three out of the three races he's entered, beating both Holmes and Woodbeck. It will be interesting to see if Vanias can stay in winning form and top the current leaders.
Brenda Carlson (Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop)leads the senior women with 928 points. Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team's Jordyn Ross is in second with 796 points, but has only done four races and beat Carlson in each of them and won three of them outright. Like Vanias, Ross appears to be a steamroller. In third is the Cross Country Ski Headquarters' Gwen Stevenson with 716 points.
There are no real trends in the junior standings - yet. Racing has been pretty regional: either the junior skier races up north or races in southeast Michigan, but not both. It's going to take a few more races to shake out the champions.
Currently, Abigail Jean (Vasa Ski Club) leads the standings with 376 points from racing in the Lakes of the North and the Cote Dame Marie. Just behind her are Rebecca Sorgenfrei (UofM Ski Club) and Logan Vear), each with 368 points from the down-state races, the Frosty Freestyle and the Krazy Klassic.
Will Laughner (UofM Ski Club) leads the junior men with 364 points from the two down-state races. Elliot Smith and Henry Urbain (both Vasa Ski Club) are second and third with 358 and 304 points from the up-north races.
Could this be an epic "North vs. South" battle for the junior title?????
