RESULTS: Great Krazy Klassic tracks help Holmes and Davis win

One would have thought it couldn't get any better after yesterday's Frosty Freestyle, but Huron Meadows Metropark finished a complete renovation of the trail, including fresh power tilling and setting tracks, by 6:00am before today's Krazy Klassic race. Four sets of tracks lead from the start into the woods, and the trail in the woods featured a full three sets of tracks, reducing track contention on the 2.5km man-made snow loop. On top of that, it was sunny, warmer, and still.

The big question: How to wax?

• Use klister and how the binder held it during the race over the abrasive snow crystals?
• Try normal kickwax?
• Try no-wax skis and skin-skis?
• Put on the skaters or classic ski with no kick wax and doublepole the race?

All options were tried and raced on, some with better results than others, depending on who was racing.

Yesterday's Frosty Freestyle women's winner, Jordyn Ross, klistered up a pair of classic skis and they were fast with good grip...when she tested them before the start. The conditions changed just enough that the grip disappeared and the klister made her skis drag. Or it could have been that super double-poler Rebecca Davis simply out-powered her on the course to take the win. Davis won the event in 35:22. Ross followed a minute later in 36:21. UofM's Abby Potts took third in 40:41.

For the men, it was two in a row this weekend for Sam Holmes...and two seconds for Jay Woodbeck. Holmes was another double-pole machine, winning in 30:15. Woodbeck was a little over a minute back in 31:25, just ahead of Alex Smith's 31:39.

The course was five laps on the 2.5km loop. (Once person - that would be me, the author - couldn't keep the count straight and did an extra lap).

The 8km racers skier three laps. Sarah Newmister took the win in 29:50. Rebecca Sorgenfrei and Logan Vear came in second and third in 34:06 and 38:06.

For the men, Matt Villalta finished well ahead for take first in 23:24. (Villalta finsiehd second in the 5km Frosty Freestyle yesterday). Stephen Doll and Tim Williams rounded out the podium in 26:50 and 28:47.
