As we approach the winter season, we are excited to share several updates regarding our cross country ski trail system and upcoming events for this season, as well as some of the recognition we received last year as both a cross country ski area and retail store.
Trail Report
A renewed effort to widen and level out the trails was continued this spring and summer. We removed 23 stumps and roto-tillered many of the uneven parts of the Manitou, Mackinaw Cut, Wild Turkey, and Rolling Hills trails. This will allow for more even skiing conditions and better grooming results this season.
Recognition
We were honored to receive statewide recognition last year by being voted the Winners in two different categories in “Vote 4 the Best”, a contest sponsored by ClickonDetroit of WDIV News in Detroit. The first category was “Winter Sports & Recreation: Cross Country Skiing”, and the second was “Winter Gear & Outdoor Apparel”. We also received recognition on a national level from Outside Magazine, who named Cross Country Ski Headquarters a “Nordic Skiing Mecca” in the US. The article stated that, after visiting our ski area, rustic lodge, and specialty retail store, “it’s almost a guarantee that beginners will walk away glowing with the joy of a newfound love.” Needless to say, we are extremely honored to have received this recognition, and look forward to continuing to be the top resource for cross country skiers in Michigan and throughout the country.
Events
We are pleased to announce our calendar of events for the 2015-2016 Fall/Winter season (below and shortly in the NordicSkiRacer.com calendar). This year, we are excited to host several events focused on introducing novice skiers to cross country skiing, including “Learn to Ski for Free” free group ski lessons every Saturday at 4:00pm, and the Priority Health Winter Trails Day on January 9th.
We are very much looking forward to introducing a new event this year, called “Ski the Beer Trail” on February 20th, 2016. Sponsored by Paddle Hard Brewing, a local brewery, this event will incorporate cross country skiing, craft beer tasting, and a rustic BBQ lunch along our groomed ski trails. More information can be found in our event calendar.
As always, we will be hosting several of our most popular recurring events, including Ribs & Blues, Paella on the Sun Deck, and Full Moon Night Skiing.
We will be open every day starting Saturday, October 31st with hours from 9:00am – 6:00pm on Friday and Saturday; 9:00am – 5:00pm on Sunday; and 10:00 – 5:30pm Monday through Thursday.
We are looking forward to a great winter season at Cross Country Ski Headquarters, located in the heart of Pure Michigan. Stay in touch by signing up for daily ski reports and news at crosscountryski.com. Andy Liebner Ski Clinic, Fast Wax Clinic, & Team Dinner
Highly accomplished skier, Olympic coach, and maker of the only US-based ski pole company, Andy Liebner will lead our annual season kick-off ski clinic on Saturday, December 5th. The good news is that you don't have to be an Olympian to learn a ton from Andy, as he is a great coach for all levels, and has helped many skiers of all abilities improve their technique. He is a huge supporter of cross country skiing in Michigan. There will be a skate clinic from 10:00am – 12:00pm, and a classic clinic from 1:00pm – 3:00pm. If there is no snow, we will run a dry-land clinic, so either way, snow or not, be sure to attend and get some truly excellent coaching on your technique! The cost of the clinic is $25/session or both for $40. Pre-register by calling 1.800.832.2663 or emailing [email protected]
After the ski clinic is our annual wax clinic at 4:00pm. This year, Fast Wax founder Dan Meyer will be giving the clinic, which will be highly informative and of interest to both racers and recreational skiers. He will go over waxing technique for skating and classic, and will also highlight some key products from increasingly popular, USA-based wax company. There is no charge for this clinic.
The XC SKI HQ Team dinner follows the wax clinic, beginning at 6pm. Come join the 2004, '07, '08, '09, '10 '13, '14, and 2015 Michigan Cup Champions (also the '10, '11 and 2013 Brumbaugh Cup Champions) in our annual kick-off potluck dinner, where we'll introduce new team members, review last year's performance, and strategize on how to bring home the MI and Brumbaugh Cups in 2016. Other topics will include technique, team training dates, and upcoming race info.
This event always ends up being a lot of fun, so even if you think you might only do one race this season, you are invited to come and enjoy this annual gathering of the most fun-loving skiers in Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
Don’t forget, we are very welcoming to new team members! Our team spans a wide range of age and ability, and members are always willing to help out fellow skiers. To find out more, join us on Team Night, or call or email Devan Thielfoldt at 248-740-8825 or [email protected], or Mariah Frye at [email protected]

Jimmy Mac's Favorite Panini Lunch Special
We like to think that we offer relatively healthy lunch options, but every now and then we just have to put bacon on the menu. The Jimmy Mac Panini is named after Mariah's brother, who first created this mouthwatering concoction of sliced grilled chicken breast, Canadian bacon, chopped spinach, sliced tomato, jalapenos, provolone cheese and pesto in a flatbread sandwich, all grilled to cheesy, bacony perfection. It is truly a culinary triumph.
