Schwab and Durand win Muffin Pursuit Race

It's official: The Michigan Cup Cross Country Ski Racing Series is over for 2014, pending the official announcement of the overall Junior champions. The last race of the season? The 22nd Annual Muffin Race at the Cross Country Ski Headquarters. It was an unusually cool morning for mid-March - but not unexpected given the unusually cold temperatures all winter, but the sun was shining and winds were calm and the course was fast.
The race was a pursuit format. Racers skied an 8km classic course, changed gear, then raced a separate freestyle race. Overall combined time was used to score the race.
Heidi Schwab was the top junior girl, winning the freestyle and placing second in the classic for a combined total of 29:06, 6 seconds ahead of Erin Lipp. Lipp was first in the classic and second in the freestyle. Sarah Goble, who has been duking it out with Lipp all season for the overall title, was third in 32:12, placing 3rd in the classic and 4th in the freestyle.
In the junior boys field, Ian Durand was first overall in 25:41, winning both the classic and freestyle legs. Clay Darling took 2nd in the classic and freestyle for second overall in 26.33. Sean Brownell took third in 28:03, placing third in the classic and fourth in the freestyle.
There were also untimed races for younger skiers. Mara Williams (1-6), Griffin Schwab (7-9), and Declan MacDougal (10-12) were the top skiers.
