The Gaylord and Mancelona area, right in the heart of the early season snow belt, will be the site of our opening ski races of the season on REAL snow. Yes there is snow, over a foot now, and the weather predictions are wonderful.
On Saturday, the Vasa Ski Club’s Lakes of the North Winterstart freestyle race starts at the Settings Restaurant at Lakes of the North near Mancelona. Race distance will be from 7 to 10 km. Senior men go at 11am followed by senior women at 11:03, followed by junior men at 11:06 and junior women at 11:09. Registration on site is from 9 to 10:30 with an 11am start. This year there are even lower registration fees for juniors at only $5, and free for Vasa Ski Club juniors. Seniors pay $15, still a bargain. A buffet luncheon is included for all racers. Please purchase your adult beverages from the restaurant and thank them for allowing us to use their facilities.

On Sunday the racing starts bright and early at 9am at Michaywe for the Wintersonnewende. Advance registration can be done on line at Ski Reg.com or follow the link at http://michigannordic.com/, which will save you money over the “day of” fee. Also, in the spirit of encouraging juniors to participate in the 7km race, a reduced entry fee of only $10 has been set. Seniors will race a 12 km freestyle course and advanced registration is $20. Proceeds go to the grooming at Michaywe. Thanks to Chris Dandeneau and Michaywe for hosting this event.
And thanks to all volunteers who help in running these races, and the host venues. Come north and have some fun for the opening Michigan Cup race weekend of Dec. 21/22.
Both are Michigan Cup Races!
