The American Ski Marathon Series has announced that the Great Bear Chase in Upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula has been added to the Series, a brand new addition to the ASM Series for 2014! The Great Bear Chase Ski Marathon was started in 1981 as a later-winter race to showcase Upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula (roughly midway between Duluth and Marquette on the upper coast of the U.P.). It's the final ski marathon in the Midwest, and is held in one of the only places in the Central Region that still has enough snow to handle a race that late in the year.
More than 600 people participated in Great Bear Chase events in 2013, including the Junior Bear Chase, 14 km, 25 km and 50 km ski races, and the second annual Snow Bike Race. The race will is season's race will be held on March 8, 2014 on the Swedetown Trails in Calumet, Michigan.
Great Bear Chase organizers are planning to make the starting area a little wider up the first hill, and to designate a trail for warm-up skiing that loops right past the start area.
