Hanson Hills 12K Classic Results

It was windy and much warmer than we've been used this season, the temperature a balmy 26F when the 2007 Hanson Hills 12K Classic race began. The race featured an uphill start, climbing to the left of the alpine slopes on the same hill that brought great suffering to the men at the beginning of the 2nd lap of Saturday's Michigan Cup Marathon freestyle race.

Skier spent much time testing kick waxes, scraping off the wax that wasn't working and putting on warmer wax just to make it up this hill without having to herringbone most of the way. The tracks were fairly firm, with a hard base.

This is a real 'Butch' of a first hill!

Just as the first racers were preparing for their interval start, it started to snow. Racers with later start times might have actually enjoyed better grip up the first hill with the new snow!

During the race, good half to three-quarters inch of new snow fell on the course. After skiers had climb the first hill and completed most of the winding, rollling race course, another set of significant hills had to be negotiated both up and down. Grip was better for many in the last hilly section: the new snow actually caused icing under several pairs of skis, racers have waxed for no-new-snow conditions.

Making a strong finish

The final section was a long downhill, made slower than usual by the new snow and a strong headwind, and onto a quarter-kilometer flat section to the finish line.

When the times were computed, it was Milan Baic from Traverse City Nordic and Emily Flynn of Team NordicSkiRacer.com on top. Milan's time was 35:54. Hugh Prichard for Team NordicSkiRacer.com came in second in 38:08, with Strait Strider Denny Paull in third in 38:10.

Emily easily won the race in 47:26. Second place finisher Lorraine Lund (Strait Striders, 57:08) finished just ahead of Gussie Peterson (Hanson Hills / Cross Country Ski Shop, 57:34).
