The first day of the Junior National Qualifier race at the Boyne Valley Lodge in Walloon Lake is over. The day started with freestyle sprint prelims: a 1km freestyle loop with the top 24 males and females moving on to the elimination rounds. Rounds of semi-finals and finals were then held.
Females
In the J2's (15 & under), Erin Lipp of Traverse Citys was the top finisher, followed by Bethany Wright of Marquette and Sarah Goble of East Lansing.
In the J1's ( 16-17), Evelyn DeLong from Calumet was first, followed by Abby Potts (Marquette) and Kendal Minor of Traverse City.
In the oldest female category (OJ's, 18-19), Ruth Oppliger was first and Ellen Wiitala second
Males
J2 males were led by Benjamin Wright of Marquette. Issac Stone of Houghton and Mike Wiitala were second and third.
Blake Murray of Marquette was the top J1 sprinter, followed by Andrew Bruning of Traverse City and Marty Gray of Marquette.
In OJ class, Calumet's Hendrick Haataja was the top sprinter, followed by Marquette's Andrew Twohey.
Two men raced in the Male 20-29 class. Ross Williams beat out the Boyne Valley Lodge's Brendan Baic as top sprinter.
Today (Sunday), juniors will race in a classic distance race over the hills at the Boyne Calley Lodge.
