Cielsa and Flynn Win Again!

Hannah Cielsa and Emily Flynn did it again, taking first among women in the Garland Glide 8KM Freestyle Race.

Traverse City's Ciesla posted the fastest time of the day (29:22), good for first place among junior girls. Kaitlyn Patterson of Cadillac repeated her finish from yesterday's classic race to take second. Rounding out the top three was Catarina Gulledge.

NordicSkiRacer's Flynn's time of 30:01 was fast enough to take first among senior women. Headquarters's Gussie Peterson was a few seconds behind in second place, followed by Jean Van Dam.

In an exciting finish to the men's race, NordicSkiRacer Steve Kuhl edged out Jessie Smith to win the senior men's 16km race. Kuhl won the race in 44:35; Smith finished just one second (or less!) back. Kuhl and Smith dropped NordicSkiRacer Hugh Pritchard just before the finish. Pritchard took third, nine seconds behind the winner. Yesterday's winner Denny Paul of the Strait Striders came in fourth.

For junior boys, NordicSkiRacer Mac Brennen from East Jordan was the 8KM winner in 23:58, beating out Elliot Putman of Traverse City and Ross Williams of Williamsburg.

Garland had a wide start area and good snow conditions on the race loop. Women and Juniors did one lap; men did two. The relatively flat course was relentless. With few real downhills to give a rest, many racers were at their redline the entire race.

Conditions were good - skiers were using their good skis. Occasionally, by the second lap, a little grass showed through from the golf course, but it was easy to navigate around. Race officials threw snow on a couple dirty sport near the start and finish where the course traveled under some trees.

Lunch and door prizes - including a stay at Garland - were much appreciated!
