UPDATED: The Michigan Cup Team Standings remain very close, with three teams having a chance to win the Michigan Cup this year.
The 36th edition of the North American Birkebeiner was a Classic in many ways. After several years of marginal weather conditions the last two Birkie’s have been cold powder versions, easy to wax for and easy to prepare the course.

GRNST skiers won the men > 50 division and placed a strong second in the men < 50 division in the Black Mountain Classic. These wins were enough to give them the overall team win for the day while the women's division was won by the Straits Striders.

We awoke to temperatures in the single digits, squeaky powder snow and lot’s of it, clear skies and a bright sun steadily shortening the shadows. It would be what the locals call a perfect, “black and blue” day.
In what has become standard weather protocol for the event, a storm dumped 12 inches of snow on the mountain one day before the race, leaving event organizers scrambling to prepare a viable course. The grooming resulted in great tracks.
