Yankus and Hardin doublepole to Krazy Klassic wins

Michigan Cup: Krazy Klassic

Sun, Jan  15, 2012 - By Mike Muha

The temperature started out a little colder than yesterday's Frosty Freestyle, and a slight breeze further chilled the air, but the sun came out in all it's glory for race time putting smiles on everyone's face at the 2012 REI Krazy Klassic cross country ski race.

Tracy Hardin and Dan Yankus had the biggest smiles, however. Harding (Straits Striders) handily beat all other women to win the Krazy Klassic 10K in 30:53, only 9 seconds slower than her skate time in the Frosty Freestyle. Over the fairly flat course, Hardin used the muscles and endurance built up from a summer of kayaking to doublepole past her competition. Hardin was 10th overall in the entire race, including men.

The remainder of the women's podium will filled out by Linda Weeks in second, in 47:15 and by Gwenn Stevenson in third with 1:05:40.

Dan Yankus (Team NordicSkiRacer) showed us that yesterday's victory was no fluke by whizzing through to the finish in 24:28,  only 45 seconds slower than his Frosty time. Says Dan, "Conditions were faster today. I may have over waxed for kick - my skis would slow down every once in awhile".

Straits Strider John Gravlin had a strong second place, finishing in 25:29, followed by Team NordicSkiRacer Yvon Dufour in 27:07.

Today's race used the same course as yesterday's Frosty Freestyle, but went in the opposite direction for six laps. The snow firmed up further and the grassy areas were easier to ski. No tracks were set, but that didn't hold any racers back.  Many racers did more doublepoling than they'd ever done before, seeing what their upper body was made of. One race exclaimed, "I've never doublepoled an entire race before!"

Thirty-one skiers completed the race. This was the first Michigan Cup classic race of the season. Two other scheduled classic race up north were postponed to a later date or changed to a freestyle event because of snow conditions.
